Definitions.

Personality.
 The Characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that
make a person unique.
• Originates within the individual and remains fairly consistent
throughout life.
• Personality research focuses on understanding the origins or causes
of the similarities and differences among people in their patterns of
thinking, emotion, and behavior
Personality Disorders
Types of Personality Disorders
1).Antisocial Personality Disorder:
Lack of regard for the moral or legal standards in the local culture.
marked inability to get along with others or abide by societal rules.
Sometimes called psychopaths or sociopaths.
OR
A personality disorder characterized by :-
Persistent antisocial,irresponsible or criminal behavior,
Often impulsive or aggressive/violent,
with disregard for any harm or distress caused to other people, and an
inability to maintain long-term and personal relationships.
NB:-
 Symptoms start showing at childhood but ,but the condition cant be diagnosed
until adolescence or adulthood.
Antisocial Personality Disorder:
Xtics of anti social personality:-
1.Hostility,significant irritability, agitation, aggression or
violence.
2.Lack of empathy for others and lack of remorse about
harming others (don’t learn from their mistakes).
3.Un necessary risk taking or dangerous behavior with
no regards the consequences/ safety of self and others.
4. Poor or abusive relationships .
2.Avoidant Personality Disorder:

A personality disorder characterized by:-


o Anxiety in social situations and personal relationships.
o Social discomfort and avoidance of interpersonal contact and/intimacy.
o Feelings of inadequacy and marked social inhibition.
o Extreme sensitivity to criticism.
EXAMPLE OF AVOIDANT PERSONALITY DISORDER.
People with avoidant personality disorder avoid social interaction, even at work,
school etc.
This is because they fear that they will be criticized or rejected or that people
will disapprove them.
They may refuse a promotion/responsibility because they fear coworkers will
criticize them.

CAUSES.
 Multifactorial , but a combination of genetics and environmental
factors play major role.
Example.
o Early childhood traumatic experiences. E.g.…….
o Childhood neglect. E.g. …. etc. (leading to low self extreme).
3.Borderline Personality Disorder:
Definition.
A personality disorder characterized by severe mood swings, impulsive
behavior, and difficulty forming stable relationships.
Xtics.
 Intense fear of abandonment or instability.
 Difficulty tolerating being alone (being abandoned by loved ones)
 Have marked impulsive, unstable affect and self image.

 Inappropriate anger, impulsiveness and frequent mood swings may
push others away, even though they want to have a loving and lasting
relationship.

4).Dependent Personality Disorder:
Dependent personality disorder (DPD) is characterized by:-
Fear of separation and submissive behavior making them incapable of taking
care of themselves.
Extreme need of other people, to a point where the person is unable to make
any decisions or take an independent stand on his or her own, even everyday
decisions like what to wear, without the advice and reassurance of others.
Submissive or Trouble/difficulty making simple decisions.
Feeling of helplessness.
Marked lack of decisiveness and self-confidence.
 needy, passive, and clinging behavior, and have a fear of separation.
Dependent personality disorder
5).Histrionic Personality Disorder:
Definition.
Personality disorder characterized by:-
Exaggerated & often inappropriate displays of emotional
reactions, approaching theatricality, in everyday behavior.
Sudden and rapidly shifting emotional expressions.
It is a pattern of excessive emotional seeking
behaviour,excessive attention seeking ,excssive need for
approval and inaprppriate seductiveness.
It begins in early childhood

6).Narcissistic Personality Disorder:
Definition.  
A mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their
own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and
admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.
Characterized by:-
Lack of empathy for other people.
Exaggerated sense of self-importance,
Need for admiration,
Selfish behavior or a fantasy of grandiosity,
Inability to see the viewpoints of others, and
Are hypersensitive to the opinions of others.

7).Obsessive-Compulsive
Personality Disorder:
Definition.
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
is characterized by a pervasive
preoccupation with orderliness,
perfectionism, and control (with no room
for flexibility) that ultimately slows or
interferes with completing a task.

8).Paranoid Personality Disorder:
Definition.
Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is a mental
health condition marked by a pattern of distrust
and suspicion of others without adequate reason
to be suspicious.
People with PPD are always on guard, believing
that others are constantly trying to demean, harm
or threaten them.

9).Schizoid Personality Disorder:

Definition.
Schizoid personality disorder is an uncommon
condition in which people avoid social activities
and consistently shy away from interaction with
others.
They also have a limited range of emotional
expression.
