STRUCTURE
TAKE NOTE: Point, line, and plane are
the basic terms of geometry. Recall that
they are also undefined terms.

• A point is represented by a dot.

Points describe at exact location in
a space. Points are named using
capital letters.
Point
A B

c
• The points shown are named point A,
point B, point C or A, B, and C.
• A line is represented by a straight
edge. A line is illustrated with two
arrowheads in opposite directions
indicating that it has no end. Therefore,
a line has no length.
𝑙 Line
A
B
C
•Lines are named using any two points on it
or using a single lowercase letter.
•The line shown is named line l or line AB (in
symbol , or , or line BC (in symbol or , or line
AC (in symbol or ).

• A plane is represented by a flat surface.
Though a flat surface is viewed as
something with length, width, and a
little thickness, a plane has no
dimensions.
• A plane is named using the three of its
points that do not belong to the same line
or capital letter that do not represent any
point.
P
P
L A
C
A
B
N
E D
• The plane shown is named using any of the
following: plane p, plane ABC, plane ADC, or plane
BDC. ABD cannot be used as name of the plane
because the points are contained in one line.
EXAMPLE:

Use the given figure to determine the

following:
a.All the points
P, Q, R, S and T
b. Four different names for the line
,,,m
EXAMPLE:

c. One-letter name for the plane

Plane L
d. A three-letter name for the plane
Any of the following: plane PQR, plane
PQS, plane PQT, plane QRS, plane OST,
plane QRT, plane PRS, plane PRS, plane
PST, plane P
•The undefined terms point, line, and plane
are used to define or represent some
concepts in geometry.

•Collinear points are points that lie in the

same line .

•Coplanar points are points that lie in the

same plane.
• Intersection is the set of points that is
common to both figures ..

• Space is the set of all points.

I L L U S T R AT I O N :
Points P, L, and N are collinear. Points A, L,
and E are also collinear.
All the points A, E, F, G, L, N, and P are
coplanar.
Q is not a point, it is the name of the plane.
 Point L lies in lines s and t; L is the
intersection of lines s and t.
I L L U S T R AT I O N :
Points may be non-collinear or non-coplanar. Consider
the figure bellow.
Given: Plane P and plane Q intersect at .
 Point A is in plane P, points E and F are in plane Q.
 Therefore, points A, E, and F are non-coplanar.
Points A, B, and F are also non-coplanar.
 Points A, C, and D are non-collinear. Points C, D, and
E are also non-collinear.
ACTIVITY:

Name each of the following from the figure.

1.A point
M
2.A line y

3.A plane
X

S
ACTIVITY:

Use the figure. Give what is asked in each of the

following:
4. Name three non-coplanar points other than points
A, E, and F; and points A, B, and F.
5. Name three non-collinear points other than points
A, C, and D; and points C, D, and E.
