Navigating Obstacles to

a Cleaner Future in
Qatar

Problem
Qatar’s struggle
with transitioning to
renewable energy
97.69 million metric tons of
carbon dioxide emissions produced in
Qatar because of fossil fuels.
That is equivalent to the weight of
around 15 million elephants.

Deciding Factors
01 Cost: The cheaper it is, the easier it is to implement in more
areas.

02 Time: The faster it can be implemented, the faster we

solve the overarching problem.

Ease of Implementation: The easier it is to implement, the less

03
changes needed to be made in Qatar.

04 Effectiveness: The more effective it is, the more we reduce

the reliance on fossil fuels.

Solution
SMRs and Microreactors
Statistics:
29 SMRs / 860 microreactors are
enough to cover Qatar’s peak
energy demand at 2020.
Nuclear energy offers a constant,
base energy production which
synergizes well with solar energy.

10
Why we chose it?
01 Provides power 24/7 without refueling for years.

02 Produces 10 MW – powering  ≈ 8,000 homes.

Reduces the chance of political conflict that was present

from large nuclear reactors.

04 Fits in the cargo of a truck.

Design Constraints
Design constraint → Solution

01 Safety concern → Automatic safety system

02 Space limitations → Places with low population density

03 High cost → Hybrid systems
