Properties of
Inequality
Trichotomy Property
For all real numbers
a and b, only one of the following is
true:
Transitive Property
For all real numbers a, b, and c:
Addition Property of Inequality (API)

For all numbers a, b, and c:

Multiplication and Division Property of
Inequality
For all numbers a, b, and c, with c
positive:
Multiplication and Division Property of
Inequality
For all numbers a, b, and c, with c
negative:
Note:
The rule is similar for .
To solve linear inequalities:
1. Simplify both sides of the inequality as needed.
a. Distribute to clear parenthesis
b. Clear fractions or decimals by multiplying it by the LCD
c. Combine like terms
2. Use the addition property so that all variable terms are on one
side of the inequality and all constants are on the other side. Then
combine like terms.
3. Use the multiplication property to clear any remaining
coefficient. If you multiply/divide both sides by a negative number,
reverse the direction of the inequality symbol.
