Manufactured
Boards
How do manufactured boards help the
environment?
• The waste from tree felling and timber conversion are used to
develop manufactured boards.
• Due to this it lessons the need to cut down trees for material which
will help conserve trees.
• If it wasn’t for manufactured boards, waste such as particles, dust,
veneers, chips, and strips would be otherwise going to waste. If these
weren’t used to create manufactured boards, more trees would be
required to be cut down for wood based products.
Plywood

• Plywood is made up of thin layers of

wooden veneers glued together.
• Thicknesses can range from 3mm to
35mm
• Plywood can be hardwood, softwood or
a combination of both
• There is an odd number of layers (3,5,7)
so the grain on both faces are going in
the same direction.
Plywood

Advantages Disadvantages
• Available in large sheets • Edges are not attractive
• Rarely warps, twists or shrinks • Edges likely to split when
• Very strong screwing or nailing
• Can be nailed and screwed
• Variety of finishes
Medium Density
Fibreboard (MDF)

• Formed using a combination of

synthetic resin and wood fibres.
• It is dense and flat material used as an
alternative to plywood or chipboard.
• MDF does not have layers as it is made
up of particles. This can result in
bowing.
• The appearance of MDF can be
enhanced by adding veneers. Melamine
or spraying the surface.

MDF

Advantages Disadvantages
• Easy to work • Cutting creates fine dust which is
• Uses waste timber which is good harmful to the lungs
for environment • Edges are unattractive
• Relatively smooth surface • Very week when wet
• Relatively cheap • Risk of splitting when using
screws
• Not very strong, could bow with
weight
Chipboard (particle
board)

• Chippings of wood glued together and

compressed into sheets.
• Various densities; normal, medium &
high
• A wooden veneer or laminate is often
added to increase durability and
improve appearance.
Chipboard

Advantage Disadvantage
• Rigid board • Weaker then most
• Using waste timber manufactured boards without
laminates
• When laminate or veneer is
applied, chipboard is very • Poor fixing with screws or nails
durable • Not suitable for exterior use
• Relatively smooth surfaces being exposed to the elements
such as rain.
• Relatively cheap
Oriented strand board
(OSB)

• Flakes are glued together using exterior

grade, water-resistant resins and wax.
• It is mainly used where the surface
appearance doesn’t matter or isn’t
visible.
• A random pattern of flattened softwood
stands make up the surface.
• Often a weatherproof membrane is
fitted to it.
