CLIMATE

What is the difference

between weather and
climate?
What is the difference between
weather and climate?
Climate is the general pattern of weather in
a certain area over a long period of time. On
the other hand, weather is the condition of
the atmosphere at a specific place and time
such as rain or cloudiness. It is the state of
the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold.
What is the difference between
weather and climate?
Weather is the atmospheric
condition that can change quickly in
a day.
Climate is the general condition of
the atmosphere within a year.
What are the
factors that
influence climate?
1. LATITUDE
Why does the earth
have different
climates?
Latitude and Climate
Most of the sun’s rays strike
vertically in places near the
equator. This makes the
temperature higher in these areas,
resulting in warm climate.
Latitude and Climate
Therefore, when an area is farther from
the equator, the air temperature is lower
resulting in a cold climate. When the place is
closer to the equator, the air temperature is
higher which results in a warm climate. As
the latitude increases, the greater the angle
the sun’s rays strike.
2. ALTITUDE
Altitude and Climate
 Where do people usually go
during summer vacations?
 Why do they go there?
 Why is it cold there?
Altitude and Climate
Altitude is the height
of something above
the level of the sea.
 The air temperature decreases as the altitude increases.
Places with higher elevations have cold climates.
 For every 1000 m, there is a drop of 6.50C. The decrease
in air temperature is due to the decrease in air pressure.
 The air molecules are farther apart, thus making the air
less dense. Lighter air cannot absorb much heat, making
air temperature lower.
3. DISTANCE FROM
BODIES OF WATER
Which heat faster: water or
soil?
Soil absorbs heat faster
than water. At the same
time, soil releases heat
faster compared to water.
These slow absorption and release of
heat by the body of water greatly affect
the climate. Places that are near the
oceans have moderate climate as the
body of water regulates the temperature.
Bodies of Water and
Climate
 The soil absorbs heat faster than water. At the same time, the soil
releases heat faster compared to water.
During daytime, the air above the sea is colder than the air above
the land. The warm air flows from land to sea. Thus, the rise of
temperature on land would be moderated.
 During nighttime, warm air would flow from sea to land, making the
temperature on land
higher.
Bodies of Water and
Climate
 Places without a body of water nearby tend to have higher
air temperature during day time.
 Places that are far from the bodies of water have extreme
climates, as there are no immediate bodies of water that will
help to circulate the movement of cold air and warm air.
 The reason why temperature of water rises or falls more
slowly than soil is that water has higher heat capacity.
