APOLOGIZING

& EXPRESSING
REGRET
EXPRESSING REGRET/SYMPATHY

When something has happened, and you would be happier if it had not
happened.
Example:
“Do that again and you will be sorry.”
“I’m sorry you didn’t pass the exam. Better luck next time.”
“I’m afraid I can’t let you in-the play has started.”
“I’m afraid I can’t come.”
To express a regret,

Example:
John: “When I was in the university, instead of studying I went to the bar
and drank. The next day when the time came to write my test, I didn’t
know the answers. I didn’t do my test well.”
So, John said “I regret it”.

Using the above example we can express regret using “should have and
shouldn’t have”,
Positive: I should have studied.
Negative: I shouldn’t have gone to the bar.”
(short form of should not, instead of should not we can use shouldn’t.)
