PASS THE

BALL OR
PAPER BALL
The instruction is while the music is
playing you should pass the ball around
the class. When the music stop, the
student with the ball must arrange the
jumbled letters that I will show you.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the students
should be able to;
a. define what is angles of elevation and angle of
depression,
b. solve problems involving angle of elevation
and angle of depression and;
c. appreciate the relevance of angles of elevation
and angle of depression in real life
situations.
Angles of Elevation
- is the acute angle measured up from the
horizontal line to the line of sight.
Angle of Depression
-is angle between the horizontal and a line a sight
below the horizontal.
Line of sight
-is an imaginary line that connects the eye of an
observer to the object being observe.
EXAMPLES:
1. An observer looks up at an angle of 40looking at
the top of a tower. Tower is 250 feet away
measured along the ground. What is the height of
the tower?

Height (h)

40º0

2. A ladder learning against a wall makes an angle of
70 with the ground. If the foot of the ladder is 7 feet
from the base of the wall, what is the length of the
ladder?

Cos Ɵ=

3. The angle elevation of a 80 foot ramp leading
to a bridge above a highway is 12º45`. Find the
height of the bridge above the highway?

4. A man measures the angle of elevation between the
ground and a building 800 ft away to be 30º. How tall is the
building?

Tan Ɵ=

800 ft
5. Suppose that when the angle of elevation of the
sun is 63.4, a building casts a shadow of 37.5 feet.
How tall is the building?

Tan Ɵ=

63.4

37.5 ft
In angle of depression the angle is between the horizontal and a line of
sight below the horizontal.
Examples:
1. An airplane is flying at height of 4 km above the ground. The distance
along the ground from the airplane f is 6 km. What is the angle of
depression from the airplane to the airport?
6 km

Tan Ɵ=

2. A squirrel sits at the top a 14-foot tall tree. He spies a nut

on the ground some distance away. After careful
measurements, he determines the nut is 74º away from the
base of his tree. How far away is the nut from the squirrel.

3. Jason is on top of a 40 m cliff. He observes a boat is 80 m away
from the base of the cliff. Find the angle of depression of the boat.

4. From the top a fire tower, a forest ranger sees his partner on
the ground at an angle of depression of 40 If the tower is 45 feet
in height,
from the base of the tower, to the nearest hundreds of a foot?

GROUP ACTIVITY

1. a ladder leans against a brick wall. The foot of the

ladder is 6 feet from the wall. The ladder reaches a
height of 15 feet on the wall. What is the angle of
elevation of the ladder makes with the wall.

2. Joel is on top of a 45m cliff. He observes a boat is

60 m away from the base of the cliff. Find the angle of
depression of the boat.
1.What is angle of elevation?
-Angle of elevation is the acute angle measured up from the horizontal
line to the line of sight.
2. What is angle of depression?
-Angle between the horizontal and a line of sight below the horizontal.
3. What is the importance of angle measurement in real life situations?
-In everyday life angle measurement is important in some hidden ways.
Just like those carpenters that they use them to measure precisely to
build a tables, chairs, windows, doors and etc.
.
4. How will you relate angle of elevation in real life?
-In real-world situations, the angle of elevation could be viewed as
the angle you would look at compared to the ground around you
when you look into the sky to see a bird flying.
Individual Activity
1. Find the angle of elevation of the sun when a flagpole that is 24 ft
tall casts s shadow that is 9 ft long.
2. Anthony stands 40 m from a building that is 25 m high. What is the
angle of elevation from Anthony to the top of the building? Round
your answer to nearest degree.
3. Suppose you are a lifeguard looking down at a swimmer in a
swimming pool. Your line of sight forms a 55 degree angle of
depression. You are 10 ft up in your seat. How far is the swimmer
from the base of your lifeguard stand?
Assignment:
