WHAT IS CANNABIS ?
Cannabis refers to a group of three plants with psychoactive properties, known as Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and
Cannabis ruderalis.

When the flowers of these plants are harvested and dried, you’re left with one of the most common drugs in the world. Some
call it weed, some call it pot, and others call it marijuana.

As weed becomes legal in more areas, names for it are evolving. Today, more and more people are using the term cannabis to
refer to weed.

Some argue that it’s a more accurate name. Others feel it’s more neutral compared with terms like weed or pot, which some
people associate with its illegal use. Also, the term “marijuana” is falling out of favor due to its racist history.

Cannabis is usually consumed for its relaxing and calming effects. In some U.S. states, it’s also prescribed to help with a range
of medical conditions, including chronic pain, glaucoma, and poor appetite.

Keep in mind that while cannabis comes from a plant and is considered natural, it can still have strong effects, both positive
and negative.
IS CANNABIS LEGAL ?
Cannabis is illegal in many places, but more and more areas are starting to legalize it for both
recreational and medical uses. In the United States, for example, several states have legalized
recreational and medical cannabis.

Others have legalized it only for medical use. But cannabis remains illegal under federal law in the
United States. The research supporting CBD use for inflammation and pain is promising. The use
of CBD-based prescription medication Epidiolex to reduce some kinds of seizures is well
established.

The laws around cannabis also vary from country to country. Some permit the use of products
containing only CBD, while others consider any kind of cannabis use a serious crime.

If you’re curious about trying cannabis, make sure to read up on the laws in your area first.
CANNABIS STATUS IN INDIA
• In India, while trade and consumption of cannabis is banned under the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985, calls for legalising its use for medicinal purposes
have grown stronger over the years.

• In January, the Centre told the Delhi High Court that the use of cannabis is not completely banned
in the country as its medical and scientific use is allowed under the law.

• In 2018, Uttarakhand had become the first state in the country to allow commercial cultivation of
hemp crops. A year later, the Madhya Pradesh government also did the same.

• In fact, in February 2020 India opened its first medical cannabis clinic — Vedi Wellness Centre in
Bengaluru. Odisha-based startup HempCann Solutions is behind the clinic, which prescribes
cannabis-infused tablets to improve health and wellness.

SHOULD CANNIBIS BE LEGALIZED
IN INDIA ?
Yes, cannabis should be legalized!
It is way less harmful than any other intoxication means which are presently legal in India.
Alcohol causes rash and criminal behavioral instincts, while weed gives you a good doze of anti depressants.
I don’t understand why it is put under heavy narcotic drugs causing the blanket ban on its use.
Because, not only will there be less criminal cases but we can protect a lot of people from getting into criminal
company.
Weed makes you happy!
Alcohol reminds you, always, of things you want to forget.
A lot of people in India, use weed, banned or not and nothing would stop them.. Legalising it would help create
a bigger market causing potential threat to the alcohol and beverage industries. Indian Govt. gives heavy taxes
on ethanol. Hence, it will be cheaper. Cannabis also has lesser side effects.. And no hangovers. Imagine waking
up daily without being hungover cause of all the fun the previous night!

It'll take a long time to withdraw the ban on marijuana though.

It is also interesting to note that consumption of the leaves and seed is not illegal in India and if you can prove
that it is what you consumed, then you cannot be booked under any Act of NDPS or IPC. \U0001f60a
