of two DOF

INTRODUCTION OF NATURAL
FREQUENCY

• Natural frequency is a characteristic property of a physical

system, which refers to the frequency at which the system
oscillates when it is disturbed from its equilibrium position.
• It is a measure of how quickly or slowly the system
vibrates or oscillates on its own, without any external force
or input.
METHODS OF FINDING NATURAL
FREQUENCY

Approximate methods
• Dunkerley’s method
• Rayleigh’s method Numerical methods

Numerical methods
• Matrix iteration method
• Stodola’s method
• Holzer’s method
OVERVIEW OF DUNKERLEY’S METHOD

Dunkerley's method is used to find the natural frequency of a system, which is

the frequency at which the system oscillates without any external forces
applied. The natural frequency is an important parameter for the analysis of
many physical systems, such as mechanical and electrical systems.
MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS
• For two degree of freedom

FIG : Spring mass system for two DOF

Expanding the determinant as follows

Solving the quadratic equation in

we could get an approximate estimate for the fundamental frequency .
If ω2 >> ω1 , then we can approximately write

Where
These can be readily verified to the reciprocal of the
equivalent stiffness values for the modified systems
Thus , we can write
ADVANTAGES

 Accuracy: Dunkerley's method is known for its high

accuracy, which makes it an effective tool for solving stiff
ODEs.
 Efficiency: Dunkerley's method is computationally
efficient compared to other numerical methods
 Versatility: Dunkerley's method can be applied to a wide
range of problems, including those in chemical kinetics,
electrical engineering, and physics.
DISADVANTAGES

• Limitations on the order of accuracy : Only for second

order ODEs .
• Iterative nature
• Complexity
• Sensitivity to parameters
APPLICATIONS

• To Measure the time it takes for the structure to complete

one full cycle of vibration. This can be done using a
stopwatch or other timing device.
• Compare the calculated natural frequency with the
expected natural frequency of the structure.
CONCLUSION

This project report has demonstrated the usefulness and effectiveness of

Dunkerley's method as an analytical tool for studying the dynamic response of
two-degree-of-freedom systems. The method can be a valuable addition to the
analytical tools available to engineers and researchers working in the field of
mechanical vibrations and dynamics.
