TOPIC: Insecticides Mixing, Handling and
Environmental safeguards
OBJECTIVES: By the end of this presentation, trainees should
be able to:
i. Learn how to safely transport the insecticides
ii. Handle and mix the insecticides according to manufacturer’s
instructions.
iii. Understand the potential hazards involved in handling of
insecticides and the first aid measures in case of
contamination.
iv. Understand the safety precautions to the Spray operator,
Householders and the Environment.
v. Appreciate the importance of safe disposal of insecticides and
empty bottles/sachets.
Introduction
The different types of insecticides used for IRS pose
different risks and these, as well as ways to prevent
them ,should clearly be assessed at four different
levels, namely:-
the safety of the population concerned
the safety of the applicators and handlers of the
insecticides
safety in storage and transportation
safety of the environment.
MIXING AND HANDLING INSECTICIDE
Read the product label(as
shown in the picture on
the left side) carefully
before using any
insecticide, If in doubt
consult the National
Malaria Control
Programme

If packed in Water
Soluble Sachets or
unit dose sachets,
insecticide can be
added directly to
the spray tank.

• Close sprayer,
pressurise and
thoroughly mix
contents of can
by shaking the
sprayer before
starting to spray.
• Re-shake after
periods of rest
(Chinese
greeting)

• Wear gumboots when
spraying (Do not
work in bare feet or
sandals)
• Keep overalls outside
boots(overall not to
be tucked inside
gumboot)
HARD HATS/HELMET
Do not allow
insecticide to drip on
the floor, when not
spraying
PROCEDURES AFTER SPRAYING
• When spraying is complete, instruct
the occupants to wait outside until the
spray is dry.
• Instruct the householder to clean the
floor before allowing children to enter.
Bury any floor sweepings.
• Wash hands before eating, drinking or
smoking
SAFETY TO THE ENVIRONMENT
DISPOSAL OF INSECTICIDE
• If any insecticide is left after a days work it
must be taken back to the IRS base and
poured in drum one (1).
