EPOXY FLOORING & COATINGS

Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd
Understanding about Epoxy Floor Coating
There are different types of floor coatings, among them is the epoxy floor coating
which is widely used on:

- Industrial floors
- Pharmaceuticals
- Warehouses
- Food & Brewages
- Residential Garage
- Basement floors
- Restaurants & even office facilities.

The epoxy basically contains three components;

- The resin component which is a light, odour free and colourless

- The other component is the hardener which is usually dark in

colour and has a strong smell

- The filler component which is usually a of mixture of many

chemicals blended together. With proper mixture and right
amount, the combination will create a chemical reaction thereby
producing a strong material guaranteed to last for a long time.

USP: All other epoxy are brittle our is flexible

So because of brittleness every one is now moving towards PU
What is epoxy?
Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

Epoxies are polymer materials that begin life as liquids and are converted to the solid polymers
by a chemical reaction. An epoxy based polymer is mechanically strong, chemically resistant to
degradation of the chemical elements in the solid form and highly adhesive during conversion
from liquid to solid. There are a wide range of basic epoxy chemicals from which an epoxy
system can be formulated.

Epoxies are known for their excellent adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, good to excellent
mechanical properties and very good electrical insulating properties. Almost any property can be
modified.

Is epoxy safe?
Epoxy is safe and there are no known harmful effects of the chemicals used in the mixture. It
also has a high resistance to chemicals such as gasoline, salt, grease, oil and solvents.

Some Advantages of using epoxy floor:

• Protects concrete from wear, chemical corrosion and chemical deterioration .

• Reduces wear to transport vehicles and reduces time spent on maintenance.

• Provides faster material movement through working and transport areas and protects products
from damage.

• Reduces floor maintenance and cleaning costs, producing a cleaner work environment and
decreases injuries with non-slip surfaces.

• Increases light reflectivity and brightens work areas which saves on utility expenses and
maximizes work efficiencies.

Why to choose epoxy floors?

There are many reasons why to go for epoxy flooring, as being seamless in
nature, hygienic properties, slip resistance etc.

Impact Resistance: Epoxy floors are generally used in areas of industry where goods are
handled in specific spaces, such as production lines, warehouses, loading bays, and where
compressive loads are generated by the movement of goods on trucks, pallets etc.

Slip Resistance: Pedestrian traffic areas require varying degrees of slip resistance dependent
on whether the environment is wet or dry.

Fire Resistance: Fire escape routes, explosive production and storage areas underground car
park decks.

Hygiene: Pharmaceutical, Automotive, food, beverage, chemical and electronics industries

have very demanding sanitary requirements. These industries often need totally dust free and
easily cleanable floors, without cracks or angled Corners.

Chemical Resistant: Epoxy floor coverings provide an impermeable seal to protect floor from
chemical attack.
POSSIBLE PROBLEM AND CAUSES
Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

Air Bubbles:

1.Air trapped in epoxy because of fast mixing of epoxy resins,

applicator should use machine with maximum 300RPM - 400RPM
2. Use of foam roller or thick nap roller
3.Also occurs due to out gassing from the cement
4.Always use large container to allow the material to rise under vacuum.
5.Hydraulic hose fittings on vacuum lines allow for leak free connections and better vacuum.

Basic steps to produce bubble free epoxy castings:

1.Careful selection of the epoxy compound to be used.

- the least number and amount of volatile ingredients.
- the lowest possible viscosities .

2.Mixing
- Hand Mixing

i) De-air each component containing fillers individually.

ii) Do not use violent motion during mixing and scrape the sides of the
container to insure a thorough mix. De-gas the mixture under vacuum if possible.

iii) If vacuum is not available, allow the mix to stand for a period of time to
allow the coarse bubbles to escape prior to pouring (don't forget to consider the pot life).

iv) Mixing of material in set proportion as per manufactures instruction, once its been done
applicator has the limited time of maximum 20 minutes to lay the epoxy.
Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

- Mix/Dispense Equipment

i) Take precautions to minimize air entrapment while topping up the storage tanks. Slow,
steady
pouring into one spot will minimize air inclusion. De-air the materials in the storage tanks if
possible.

ii) Keep the fittings, valves and dispense pistons in good repair. Defective components will
allow air to be sucked into the dispense lines.

iii) Cavitations and lead/lag problems can be sources for air inclusions.

3.Pouring

- Pour slowly into one corner of the mould or container. Pouring slowly will allow the
rising
material to push the air ahead of it minimizing air entrapment.

- Pour with the least amount of turbulence

4.Curing

- If possible, de-air the poured assembly prior to cure. This step is not necessary for parts
involving small volumes. Large mass castings or castings with complicated shapes,
conducive to air entrapment, should be de-aired prior to cure for best results.

- Establish and use the appropriate temperatures that result in slow, even gellation.
Provide a sufficient reservoir of cool material to replenish the shrinkage that takes place
Pinholes: Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

When protecting concrete with epoxy floor coatings, or any surface coating, pinholes through
the coating sometimes form.

They have two possible cause:-

1.Pinholes can be caused by air trapped below the coating in tiny

surface voids.
2.The air expands outward before the coating has cured due to
solar heating.

3.Application of laying primer to be checked properly, as due to porous concrete slab primer
tends to penetrate allowing some portion of top surface to dry quickly.

4.Due to the surface inconsistencies and volatiles escaping.

5.Use of lamb wool roller after application of primer.

6.Surface tension causes epoxy film to pull away from pinhole before it gels.

7.After applying epoxy with an 800 Roller Cover, force epoxy into pinholes with a stiff plastic or
metal spreader held at a low or nearly flat angle. Re-coat and tip off coating after all pinholes are
filled.
Fisheyes: Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

Fish eying occurs due to surface tension differences between the coating and a grease or silicon
(sometimes even dust) particle. Simply put, the coating pulls away from the contaminant, leaving
a tiny crater like structure in the coating. This crater is not connected to a subsurface air filled
space. Fish eying is almost always a surface preparation problem.

1.Contamination of the coating or surface preparation or improper

abrasion for the coating.

2.Be sure mixing equipment is clean. Avoid waxed mixing containers.

3.Fisheying is almost always a surface preparation problem.

Induction Time:
Some epoxies (and most 2 part polyurethane's) have an induction time associated with them.
This means after mixing the 2 parts you need to let the mixture sit for some period of time before
using it. If you skip this step, the epoxy may not get hard and/or the colour may be off.

Color differences- Like with all other paints, there can be color differences between batches of
epoxy. If you order your epoxy in small units, it is very possible that the cans may come from
different production batches.

Also pigments can settle to the bottom of the cans and with thick epoxies that are harder to mix
you might get color differences just because you didn't 're-mix' the epoxy's pigments in the cans
equally well. Epoxies all yellow, even the pigmented ones.

Epoxy that has been exposed to sunlight will become a different color than the same epoxy, from
the same batch, still in the can.
Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

Epoxy stays tacky –

If it is just tacky in spots but hard in other places, this is poor mixing. If the entire surface is
tacky, two parts are not mix in the correct ratio. The epoxy may also be tacky if is not given it
enough time to get hard. Cure time is temperature dependent. Cold weather could slow the
cure rate. Curing will continue when the temperatures warm back up. Still, the epoxy should be
hard within a few days at most.

Epoxy stays tacky - Often occurs due to:-

1. Components are not mixed in the correct ratio.

2. The epoxy may also be tacky if is not given it enough time to get hard. Cure time is
temperature dependent. Cold weather could slow the cure rate.

3. Curing will continue when the temperatures warm back up. Still, the epoxy should be hard
within a few days at most.

4. Bond Failure: a weak surface layer of concrete (from either very old or very new concrete).
Or
due to less consumption of primer.

Cracks :

Existing 'active' cracks and/or expansion joints. If you simply paint over them the coating will
crack or peal when movement or shifting takes place.
Epoxy Failures:
Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

Water: Water in the concrete is a major cause for premature epoxy floor coating failures.
Concrete tends to hold and retain water for a much longer period than most people can or will
wait prior to coating. Floors can have dry areas and damp areas, including some damp areas
that never dry out. Touching the surface to test for dryness can be a misleading method for
determining moisture.

Humidity: High humidity can be as detrimental as moisture. Many coating products do not
recommend applications when humidity's exceed 75 or 85 percent.

Moisture Flow: Migrating moisture, as opposed to simple standing water, creates a more

difficult problem. The common sign of this kind of failure is water filled blisters. Just a tiny
amount of 'flow' pressure under a still curing coating can ruin the bonding process still taking
place. There is no good answer here, but rapid drying/curing coatings have a better chance of
working.

Dust and Dirt: A layer of dust, dirt, or grease is not going to aid coating adhesion. The coatings
stuck, but to the dust and dirt on the floor instead of to the floor itself. The applicator will need
to decide how much time and effort to put into surface dust removal.

Salts: Salts and/or minerals either deposited out on the surface from the curing of fresh
concrete, or from the evaporation of seawater on concrete can quickly ruin a coating. For
starters the salts work like dust and other contaminants getting between the coating and the
surface. Without moisture, salts tend to form crystals, which can interfere with bonding.
Construction Chemicals Pvt. Ltd

Grease-oils-silicones: Few, if any, coatings stick to greasy, oily, waxy surfaces. Oily surfaces
can be tricky. Even on what seems like a non-greasy surface, many coatings will 'bead-up'
leaving behind hollow, coating less circles or voids. Hosing down, high-pressure water, and
even grit blasting, is no guaranty that greases will be removed, indeed, they will probably stay
behind. Greasy, oily surfaces require a degreasing chemical to remove the residue

Porosity: Some coatings tend to be quite porous, permitting moisture, chemicals, etc. to

invade the coating and attack both the coating and it's bonding interface. Some epoxies are
more porous than other kinds of epoxy.

Brittleness: Many coatings will fail because they cannot handle the expansion/ /contraction (or
movement) of the underlying surface, or they crack when struck. Once a coating cracks, even
a tiny micro fracture, that crack becomes a pathway for moisture and corrosion. It is the
beginning of failure for the coating.

UV: Ultra-violet radiations from the sun, UV, will breakdown most coatings. Epoxies tend to
yellow and chalk, other coatings, such as plastics, get brittle and crack. After too much UV the
coatings will fail.
