MODERN INTERIOR

DESIGN
INTRODUCTION

• MODERN INTERIOR Design, actually was born out of a

design movement at the turn of the 20th century.

• Modern style is simple, uncluttered, and clean-looking.

• Modern design is rooted in modernism, the turn-of-the-

century movement characterized by an emphasis on

abstract thinking, functionality, and stark, simple forms.

• The idea behind incorporating modern design into many

homes and businesses, is to maintain a certain balance

between the decorations and furnishings, and their

intended purposes.

• In other words, if it doesn’t have a practical purpose in

the space, it doesn’t need to be there.

• Modern design grew out of the modern art movement,

which rejected the maximalist tendencies of Victorian

design in favor of a form-follows-function philosophy.

• New technologies, industrialization, and access to

building materials like steel and concrete also informed

modern art and architecture from the 1920s to the early

1950s.
Defining Elements of Modern Design

1. Clean lines:

Modern homes are constructed with clean, straight lines and

minimal ornamentation.
2. Simple and unadorned

Modern interior design style is simple and unadorned. The most

important quality of this style is being functional. Form always

follows function.
3. Natural materials and earthy tones

Modern interior design usually also includes the use of

natural materials and neutral or earthy colors. Think

unpainted wood, metals, leather and monochromatic

colors.
4. Natural light and unadorned windows

In modern designed homes, natural light is very important so lots

of windows are important, but they are typically unadorned.

5. Open floor plan:

• Use furniture instead of walls to differentiate between the

spaces of an open plan home.

• For example, a kitchen island can separate a kitchen from

the dining room, and a sectional sofa can bring definition

to an open living room.

6. Simple, functional furniture

• Modern furniture like architecture emphasizes simplicity

and function. In modern style homes, you will usually see

low, horizontal furnishings with clean lines.

• And the furniture is usually made of natural materials like

unpainted wood, leathers, steel, chrome or glass.

7. Minimal home decor:

Modern spaces are free from clutter and unnecessary

flourishes.

Modern decor prioritizes functionality over fashion.

8. Practicality and Functionality

• Practicality and functionality are arguable the two most

important features of modern interior design.

• The whole movement is centered around decorative

pieces for function, not for show.
