POTASSIUM

- An Essential plant nutrient -

By Sikandar Hayat

AWKUM
INTRODUCTION
• Potassium is an essential plant nutrient that plays a critical
role in plant growth and development.
• Potassium is required in large quantities by all crops, making
it an important component of fertilizers.
• In this presentation we will cover the functions of
potassium, deficiency and toxicity symptoms.
FUNCTIONS OF POTASSIUM

• Potassium is involved in many important functions in plant growth

and development.
• These include osmoregulation, enzyme activation, transportation of
sugars and starches, and more.
• Potassium also helps plants to tolerate environmental stresses such
as drought and cold temperatures.
DIFFICIENCY SYMPTOMS
• Potassium deficiency can lead to a range of symptoms in plants.
• These include stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), necrosis
(death of leaf tissue), and reduced yield.
• In severe cases, potassium deficiency can lead to plant death.

TOXICITY SYMPTOMS
• While potassium is essential for plant growth, too much can be
harmful.
• Symptoms of excess potassium in plants can include leaf burn,
reduced growth, and impaired root development.
• Toxicity is more common in plants grown in high-potassium soils or
where excess potassium fertilizers have been applied.
