COMPARATIVES

ADJECTIVES
Fátima Reyes
When we use comparatives
adjectives?
Comparative Adjectives are words used to describe a noun by
comparing it to another noun. We usually think of ‘er’ words like
bigger or smaller, but they can be a little trickier than that.
01 One-Syllable Adjectives
Simply add –er. If the adjective has a consonant + single vowel + consonant spelling, the final
consonant must be doubled before adding the ending or adjectives that end in a vowel +
consonants -t, -d, -g, -m, -n

FORM:
Adjective + -er + than
Examples:
• She is older than you.
• The man is taller than the minions.
• New York is bigger than Los
Angeles.
02 Two-Syllable Adjectives
Adjectives of two syllables that end in -y: change the -y to an -i and add -er

FORM:
Adjective + -ier + than
Examples:
• My joke was funnier than yours.
• This section is easier than the rest.
Two or More Syllable
03
Adjectives
Adjectives with three or more syllables form the comparative by putting “more or less” in
front of the adjective.

FORM:

Examples:
• My girlfriend is more beautiful than yours.
• Alex is more intelligent than you.
Irregular
Adjectives
These very common adjectives have completely irregular comparative.

Examples:
• I did better than the rest of my class on the final.
• She ran farther in this race than she did in the last one.
