Brazilian Carnival
Every year for a week in February, Brazil is taken over by
the wild, exuberant and pulsing display that is Carnival.

Carnival is an annual Catholic festival that occurs leading up to Lent.


Like Mardi Gras and other Carnivals from around the world, it’s a big
celebration of the food and pleasures that one has to give up during
Lent. In Brazil, the Carnival is a really big deal and they plan the
festivities months in advance.

This Party happening all over Brazil, but Rio de


Janeiro and Salvador de Bahía are by far the
largest celebrations.
Carnival typically involves lots of parades and
PEOPLE street parties full of people with elaborate costumes
and masks. You’ll see people indulging in food and
drink that anticipates the fasting that will come with
Lent.

The costumes are remarkably elaborate, and every


group competes to win title for best dance, music
and design.

You can go with the whole family or many friends, It’s very
nice and funny. Don´t worry if you don´t have costumes. Just
enjoy!
FOOD
Feijoada Moqueca baiana Carurú
Slow-cooked pork and A fragrant fish stew. A dish similar to gumbo made
beans with rice. with shrimp and toasted nuts.

There’s also plenty of street food and sweet


treats on offer, such as brigadeiros
(chocolate truffles made with condensed
milk and cocoa) and quindim – a dessert
made of egg yolks, sugar and ground
coconut.

There are many events that music accompanies


throughout Carnival. The blocos include bands
and floats, with people coming together to move
to music throughout the streets.
