What are the similarities and the differences of those advertisements?

Brainstorming
Intelligence and creativity are related one with another in a unique way.
Intelligence is described as “the ability to acquire and utilize knowledge,
where as creativity deals with the ability to come up with new ideas
through a mental process of connecting existing concepts.”
To be creative is to pull existing knowledge into a new situation and
quickly sort through potential outcomes. Your creativity is used when you
are designing something, such as an advertisements.
A. Adequacy and Inadequacy
(Too ... to; Enough to ....)
Too and enough indicate degree.

Too is used to express that something is below


or above what is desirable.

Too + Adjective/Adverb + To Infinitive

a. Too + Adjective + Infinitive

 To infinitive verb in this form relates to the subject of


the sentence. It has an active meaning.
Example: You are too young to drive.
(You are too young. You cannot drive.)
 To infinitive here represents the object. Then it has a
passive meaning.
Example: The plate was too hot to touch.
(The plate is too hot, it cannot be touched.)
 The infinitive can refer similarity to the object of
preposition.
Example: The grass was too wet (for us) to sit on.
(The grass is too wet. We cannot sit there.)
b. Too + Adjective + A + Noun + Infinitive

Example: He is too experienced a conductor to mind


what the critics say.
(As a conductor, he is too experienced to
mind what the critics say.)

c. Too + Adverb + Infinitive

Example: He spoke too quickly for me to understand.


(He spoke too quickly. Then, I cannot
understand what he said.)

Enough is used to express
that something which is sufficient.

a. Adjective + Enough + Infinitive

 The infinitive can refer to the subject.


Example: She is old enough to travel by herself.
(She is not young. She can travel by herself.)
 The infinitive refers to the object.
Example: The case is light enough for me to
carry. (The case is light. It can be carried by me.)
 It can be refer to the object of preposition.
Example: The ice was thick enough to walk on.
(The ice was thick. We can walk on it.)

b. Enough in negative sentences means
less than sufficient/ necessary
 You’re not working fast enough, to finish it on
time.
(You’re not working fast enough, you won’t finish

your work on time.)


 They boy is not tall enough to be a basket player.
(They boy is not tall enough, he cannot be a
basket player.)
 The car doesn’t run fast enough to get to the
airport on time.
(The car doesn’t run fast enough, it won’t to get
to the airport on time.)

Exercise
Work in groups of four. Write a dialog based on the
following situation. The dialog must use the expression
of adequacy and inadequacy

Situation :
One of your friends is planning to continue your study in
one of foreign countries. The rest of you give input
regarding his/her plan.
B. Advertisement
 Advertising is a form of marketing communication used
to promote or sell something.

 Advertising messages are usually


paid for by sponsors and viewed via
various media.

 Virtually any medium can be used for


advertising. Commercial advertising media
can include: wall paintings, billboards, street
furniture, printed flyers, radio, television,
web banners, bus, magazines, etc.
How to Analyze an Advertisement

The following questions can help foster an awareness of


this process. Use them for class or group discussions or
your own individual analysis of ads or commercials.

1 What is the general ambience of the


advertisement? What mood does it create?

2 What is the design of the advertisement? Does it use


axial balance or some other form? How are the basic
components or elements arranged?

3 What is the relationship between pictorial elements
and written material and what does this tell us?

4 What is the use of space in the advertisement?


Is there a lot of “white space” or is it full of

do they play in the ad’s impact?

6 If there are figures (men, women, children, animals)
what are they like? What can be said about their

Advertisements is a picture, short film, song, etc. which tries to persuade
people to buy a product or service, or join an event.
Advertisements are commonly found in mass media, such as newspaper,
television, or internet and usually put in public places.
