Inverse Property
Let e be the identity element under a binary operation * defined on the
set S, (where a ∈ S), then the element b, is said to be the inverse of a if
and only if

a*b=b*a=e

or it can be written as a * = * a = e
Inverse Property
Notation:
The inverse of the element a under a given binary operation is denoted
by .

Note:
Here -1 is not an exponent of a but it can be shown as the reciprocal of
the variable. Inverse is simply the opposite of something.

e = 0 & a = 24 Given: e = 1 & a = 12
a * a-1 = a-1 * a = e a * a-1 = a-1 * a = e

Solution:
a * a-1 = a-1 + 24 = 0 Solution:

The binary operation * is defined on the set of R of real numbers by a * b
= a + b + 7.
Find the inverse of a = 8 given the identity element e = -7.
Solution:
a * a-1 = a-1 * a = e
a*a =a +a+7=7

The binary operation ∆ is defined on the set R of real numbers by a ∆ b =
a + b – ab, for all (a,b) ∈ R.
Find the inverse of a = 5 given the identity element e = 0.
Solution:
a * a-1 = a-1 * a = e

a-1 + 5a-1 = 0 – 5
a-1 + 5a-1 = –5
In Summary
The inverse of an element in a binary operation is generally denoted
by a–1. The inverse of an element a (if it exists) with respect to the
addition (or multiplication) binary operations is generally called the
additive (or the multiplicative) inverse and is denoted by −a (or ). So,
when a binary operation is performed on two elements in a set and the
result is the identity element of the set, with respect to the binary
operation, the elements are said to be inverses of each other.
