Design Issues in Optical

Devices
Material selection
Choosing materials that are environmentally friendly, recyclable, and
have a low environmental impact is important. The materials used in
the optical devices should be selected based on their environmental
characteristics, such as toxicity, biodegradability, and recyclability.

• H319 Causes serious eye irritation.

• H335 May cause respiratory irritation.
• H373 May cause damage to organs (Lungs) through prolonged or
repeated exposure.
Eco-Design
Eco-design aims to minimize the environmental impact of a
product throughout its entire life cycle. In optical device design,
this can involve using energy-efficient components, reducing
material waste, and considering the product's end-of-life
disposal.

• Semiconductor manufacturing contributes to 31% of global

greenhouse gas emissions, and the increasing usage of
electronic chips drives this upward trend.
Life Cycle Assessments

Life cycle assessments involve evaluating the environmental impact of a

product from raw material extraction to disposal. In optical device
design, this can involve considering the energy and resource use of the
product throughout its entire life cycle.
Recycling
Recycling involves reusing materials from a product to create new
products. In optical device design, this can involve using recycled
materials in the product and designing for easy disassembly to enable
efficient recycling.

• 80% of these can readily be reused, while the remainder is further

refined.
