INTRODUCTION
You encounter persuasive writing in your
everyday life through television commercials,
magazine ads, and marketing brochures, among
others. What makes persuasion a powerful tool in
writing? How do you effectively persuade an
audience? Knowing how to write persuasively
allows you to express your personal conviction or
opinion about an issue or topic and makes the
audience agree with or adopt your conviction or
opinion.

Persuasive Writing intends to convince
readers to believe in an idea and action. Many
pieces such as critiques, reviews, reaction
papers, editorials, proposals, advertisements, and
brochures use different ways of persuasion to
influence readers.
TECHNIQUES IN
PERSUASIVE
WRITING
1. PRESENTING STRONG
EVIDENCE
Presenting strong evidence such as facts
and statistics, statements of expert authorities
and research findings establishes credibility.
Readers will more likely be convinced to side
with the writers’ position or agree with their
opinion if it is backed up by verifiable evidence.
2. CONCRETE, RELEVANT,
AND REASONABLE
EXAMPLES
Concrete, relevant, and reasonable
examples can enhance the writer’s idea or
opinion. They can be based on observations or the
writer’s personal experience.
3. ACCURATE, CURRENT,
AND BALANCE
INFORMATION
Accurate, current, and balanced
information adds to the credibility of persuasive
writing. The writers do not only present
evidence that favors their ideas, but they also
acknowledge some evidence that opposes their
own. In writing, though, their ideas would be
sounder.

MODES OF
PERSUASION
The modes of persuasion were introduced by the Greek
philosopher Aristotle (384 BCE–332 BCE) to teach his students
how to convince their audience. Even now, the modes are still
being used. These are called ethos , pathos , and logos ; they are
also considered ethical strategies to convince an audience of one’s
credibility or character.
ETHOS
Ethos is an appeal to ethics. It uses the credibility
of the writer to convince the audience. The writer’s
expertise in his or her subject matter, level of
education, and profession can support such credibility.
For instance, an experienced sailor writing about sailing
techniques would have ethos, while a frequent reader of
books about sailing with no experience would not.
However, one who is not an expert can still build
credibility by ensuring that his or her writing is well-
researched and that the appeals to emotion or logic are used
responsibly.
PATHOS
Pathos is an appeal to emotions. Human emotions
such as sympathy, outrage, and sadness can be used to
motivate readers. Making use of these emotions can get
the audience to be emotionally invested in what the
writer is saying. It is often used in advertising, and the
probable reason is that our emotions touch our very
core and appeal to our values. However, pathos is not
objective; so in some fields, it may not be held in as
high regard as other modes of persuasion.
LOGOS
Logos is an appeal to logic and reason. It aims to
be factual in its approach. In persuasive writing, facts
are presented in a logical manner, avoiding fallacies and
unverified information. Often, the consistent use of logos
builds ethos.
