The Etymology of Philosphy
Pythagoras

- Who coined the word philosophia or


philosophy. Pythagoras of Samos was
an ancient Ionian Greek philosopher
and the eponymous founder of
Pythagoreanism. His political and
religious teachings were well known
in Magna Graecia and influenced the
philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and,
through them, Western philosophy.

Aristotle was a Greek philosopher and


polymath during the Classical period in
Ancient Greece. Taught by Plato, he was
the founder of the Lyceum, the
Peripatetic school of philosophy, and
the Aristotelian tradition.

Eros

Eros is a concept in ancient Greek


philosophy referring to sensual or
passionate love, from which the term
erotic is derived. Eros has also been used
in philosophy and psychology in a much
wider sense, almost as an equivalent to
"life energy"
Agape is a Greco-Christian term referring to
unconditional love, "the highest form of love,
charity" and "the love of God for man and of
man for God".
Philia, often translated "highest form of love", is one of
the four ancient Greek words for love: philia, storge,
agape and eros. In Aristotle philia is usually translated
as "friendship" or affection. The complete opposite is
called a phobia.
