RACK AND ITS COMPONENTS

 What is a Network Rack?

 A network rack is a metal frame chassis that holds, stacks, organizes,
secures and protects various computer network and server hardware
devices. The term “network” refers to the rack actually housing this type
of hardware.
 How to Set-Up a Network Rack
 Some network racks hold servers and other computer systems, although some are designed
with specific device types in mind. The rack works by securing technology with brackets,
bolts, and other rack hardware to keep this equipment in place. You can also mount this
equipment using certain types of rails and shelves, such as switch rails and switch shelves.
TYPES OF RACK CABINET
 Open frame rack - open frame rack are just open frames—with mounting rails
but no sides or doors. This kind of rack is typically used for applications that
do not need the rack to perform airflow control or provide physical security.
Open frame racks are optimal for network wiring closet and distribution
frame applications that have high-density cabling, due to they offer flexible
access and lots of open space that facilitate cable management.

 Rack enclosure - are also referred to as rack cabinets, they have removable
front and rear doors, removable side panels and four adjustable vertical
mounting rails. The front and rear design of rack enclosures achieves ample
airflow for any installed equipment. Rack enclosures provide an ideal
alternative for applications which require heavier or hotter equipment. And
they often include additional rails to mount accessories like vertical cable
managers and PDUs. Nowadays, rack enclosures have gained in much
popularity in data centers and server rooms.
 Wall-mount racks just do what the name indicates—they can be attached
to the wall. In this case, wall-mount racks can save floor space and fit in
areas where other racks cannot. They can be open frame racks or enclosed
cabinets. Wall-mount racks fail to support as much weight as their
counterparts since they are basically smaller than those floor-standing
ones. However, by adding rolling casters, they can also accommodate floor-
standing applications.
 Outdoor rack cabinet - Outdoor series rack cabinets can be used to meet
your requirements with plinth base, standing type wall and pole types. It
provides protection of installed applications for ambient and humidity
conditions hence galvanized construction and single/double hulls.
 Outdoor type rack cabinets provide you IP54 and IP66 class protection for
outdoor telecommunication distribution points, CCTV monitoring system,
security system, auto ways observing stations, Traffic controlling and
observing systems, industrial plants, Military areas, signalizations and
communications systems requirements.
 Rack rails

 Sliding rails
 What is U
 A rack unit (abbreviated as U, less commonly seen as RU) is a unit of measurement applied
to equipment racks and the servers, disk drives and other devices that they contain.
One U is 1.75 inches (44.45mm); the standard rack, at 19 inches, is 42U. three-hole
grouping is also called a rack unit. ( 1U= 3 holes )

 Cable manager –
A mass of cable wires scattering and tangling together is bothersome
for operators to implement maintenance. The neglect of effective
cable management also leads to cable damage and low performance
issues. To make clean and safe entry and exit for each cable, one
must employ proper cable rack manager to ensure an organized and
neat rack environment.
 Overview of cable manager
 organizing and protecting running cables
 reducing crosstalk and signal interface
 facilitating airflow and cooling
 Types of cable manager
 Horizontal
 Vertical

Horizontal cable manager –

Horizontal cable management panel is often installed in front of equipment
such as network switch in parallel. Most cases horizontal cable manager for
rack is matched with patch panel and rack-mount enclosure to provide
cables a safe and organized pathway from switch ports into the vertical
cable manage
• rings cable manager

 Finger duct cable manager

 Vertical cable manager
vertical cable management panel is installed erectly in each side of the
cabinet walls to take over cables traversing out of the horizontal cable
manager. Usually there are several horizontal cable managers for rack
placed in different ladders and two bunches of wires are hanging down
from each ladder. Thus the bilateral vertical managers play important role
to make a clean multilayer cabinet.
 Single sided vertical cable manager
 Dual sided vertical cable manager
 Which cable manger we choose ?
 1. To prevent equipment from overheating, choose horizontal cable
manager with brush strip to ensure better cooling.
 2. For optimal cable care and protection to protect fragile fibers
from damage, you can choose horizontal cable manager with finger
duct.
 3. To enable flexible routing of massive cords in proper bend radius,
pick cable manager with D-ring. It is made with steel for strength
and durability, available with 1U and 2 U
 Patch panel –

 A patch panel is an effective equipment to keep your data center or server

room organized as well as make it much easier to move, add or change the
cabling infrastructure in the future.
 patch panel, also referred to as a patch bay, patch field or jack field, is a
mounted hardware assembly that contains a set number of ports to connect
and manage the incoming and outgoing fiber or copper cables.

 A patch panel can provide interconnect or cross-connect patching methods

to splice and terminate cables. It works by terminating cable elements and
routing the signals to the final destination via the patch cords.
 Benefit of patch panel

 Reduce Cable Congestion-Reduced cable slack means less clutter, less confusion and an
easily organized. You can also manage cables in any direction–horizontal or vertical, front
or back.
 Troubleshooting – Each port on the panel is clearly labeled, making it much easier to
replace cabling should it become necessary.
 reduced Risk of Outage – Whenever adding or removing devices there is always a risk of
damaging the surrounding cables, especially when you have to reach back into a server
rack. Having a patch panel helps reduce the risk of unplanned outages by making it much
easier to add and remove cables without touching the main hardware.
 Organization – A patch panel will be each to reach and see, and every cable is going into
one central location. Having all the cables connected to one panel helps to keep cables
from becoming tangled and messy.
 Types of patch panel –
 Standard fiber optic patch panel –
 The standard fiber optic patch panel in FS can be loaded with LC/SC/MTP adapters, which
are commonly used as the intermediate connection between the backbone and patch
cables.
 Breakout patch panel
Breakout patch panels are specifically designed for high-density 40G-10G and
100G-25G breakout cabling
 Modular patch or keystone panel
the other type of modular patch pane is the multimedia adapter panel which allows users to
customize their own adapter panel.
Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet Patch Panel
The Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet patch panel or network patch panel is designed for
both shielded and unshielded copper cables like Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a
Ethernet cables. The Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet patch panels come with the
feed-through and punch-down designs.
 Types of Ethernet patch panel
 Punch-down or keystone
 feedthrough

Punch-down patch panel

 Feedthrough patch panel
 Feedthrough patch panel provides patching without punching down the wires to the ports.
There are generally Cat5e and Cat6 feedthrough patch panel configured in 1U (24 ports)
or in 2U size (48 ports). Each feedthrough patch panel has both RJ45 ports on the front
and rear side.

 Cable lacing bar
 Which patch panel we choose ?

 Punch down patch panel requires high techniques and carefulness. For
small network, you are suggested to buy traditional patch panel on
condition that you’re skilled at punching down wires. For big project,
feedthrough patch panel is the first choice.
 What is network rack shelf
 Network shelves, or rack shelves, are shelves specifically designed to be mounted within a
network rack. They help organize network rack equipment in a secure and organized
fashion without sacrificing large amounts of rack space
 There are many different types of rack shelves designs such as:
 Fixed shelves
 Sliding shelves
 Vented shelves
 Solid shelves
 2 Post shelves
 Fixed shelves
 Sliding shelves
 Vented shelves
 Vented shelves allows for added flow-thru ventilation. They are designed for
19" rack mount widths and are made of 16 AWG steel.
 Solid shelves

 2post shelves or centre mounted

 Keyboard and mouse shelves

 Rackmount drawer
 LCD drawer with KVM switch
  LCD KVM is a product that integrates the LCD monitor, keyboard, mouse with the KVM
Switch. As the objective of LCD KVM development is to assist users in saving rack space
and increasing management efficiency.
 LCD KVM switch manages 3 to 4 server simentinously.
 Rack brackets
 Screw and nuts
 Filler panel
 blanking Panels, also called "filler panels", are used to control the airflow inside
of server racks. Without blanking panels, the hot exhaust air from the rear of
the servers will recirculation through empty spaces in the server rack into the air intakes
on the front of the servers.
 Power distribution unit (PDU)
 Server rack fan tray
 Server rack enclosure fans are used to help facilitate air flow within
the rack by adding ventilation where it is needed most. Rack fans can be
mounted in cabinet doors, cabinet sides, and cabinet roofs. Some
manufacturers also make rack mount fan trays that sit directly in
open rack space.
 Rack smart fan plate
 Cable ties and labels
 cable labels help you to identify the wire bundles or a particular wire
 Cable tie help to holding the cables together
 they are usually plastic, nylon, or velcro strips that are used either used once or that are
reusable.
 Plastic cable tie

 nylon cable tie - Cable ties are available in a wide range of materials, each with its
own specific properties. Nylon ties are the most common, and varieties can offer good
resistance to weather and ultraviolet rays in lower-temperature environments
 velcro or zip tie
 UV resistant tie
 Use for outdoor

 Reusable tie
 Self-laminating labels
 Self-adhesive labels

It is a sticky label

 Label tie -
 Cable marker clip
 Server camera and control access
