Introduction

● Airbag is one of the inevitable components in automobiles specially in car and


vehicles to safeguard drivers and passengers.
● In 1966, the US Congress passed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act
and established the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to ensure its
implementation.
● In 1969, Safety Majors, an issue through notice, focused on the airbags placed in
automobiles in the US. Nevertheless, the manufacturers went against this issue for
competing in the market.

❏ Historically seat belt usage in US has been low. In 1974, 26% motorists used seat

belts which dropped to 14% in 1983.

❏ Due to the Opposition of airbags by the Automobile industry, the notice Motor

Vehicle Safety Standard (MVSS) 208 appeared doomed by 1981

❏ Behind the reason: change of cost of production, retooling the industry for this

addition, focus drawn to fuel-efficient cars instead of retooling automobiles.
