BEAT GENERATION

- Group of writers that emerged in the 1950s to reject


literary formalism and American culture built on
capitalism and materialism. They included Allen
Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Gray Snyder, Gregory Corso,
Lawrence Ferlinghetti and others.
• The Beat Generation began 1940s and entered the
public consciousness 1950s.
• The Beat Generation subculture movement, a group of
author explored and influenced American culture and
politics.
• Silent Generationers in the 1950s, known as Beatniks
The Beat Generation Championed
• Personal freedom and the expression of free-flowing
thoughts and ideas, incorporating use of drugs, ideas
about sex and sexuality.
• Experimental nature of jazz music.
• “Back -to – nature ” influenced by Zen Buddhism and
Native American culture.
Beat Poetry
• Less Formal than of poetic movements that had come before.
• Certain Rules and Ideas regarding poetic structure, Beat writers
made poetry personal.
• Less structured Forms of writing that would allow for the free-
flow of emotions , ideas, and individual beliefs.
• Influenced by jazz music and incorporated the spontaneity of
the music into the release of their ideas.
