Learning Objectives:

• I can define mixture;

• I can differentiate the two types of mixtures; and
• I can learn the essential of mixtures to living and
nonliving things on earth.
Mixtures
A combination of two
or more substances that
are only physically
combined and can thus
be separated into their
components through
simple physical means.
Mixture Types

•HOMOGENEOUS
•HETEROGENEOUS
Homogeneous Mixtures
• The prefix: "homo"- indicates
the same.
• This means that the appearance,
properties, and composition are
uniform throughout a sample.
What are SOLUTION
It is a homogenous mixture of
substances and can be physically
combined in varying proportions.
Examples of solutions

•Salt water
•Clean Air
•Vinegar
A solution has two parts

• The substance that gets The one that does the

dissolved SOLUTE. dissolving SOLVENT
(WATER)
Solids, liquids and
gases can be combined
to create a mixture.
How molecules in homogeneous mixture are
arranged?
Heterogeneous Mixtures
• The prefix: "hetero"- indicates
difference
• A heterogeneous mixture
consists of visibly different
substances or phases
• Can be separated physically.
Examples
• Pizza
• Sandwich
• Chex Mix

Pure substance
 A matter that has distinct
properties and compositions.
 It cannot be separated into two or
more substances by physical or
mechanical means.
Mixture
 The physical combination of two or
more substances that can be
separated.
