2 Moreover - Furthermore

Used to transition into additional information or to connect a sentence to a related


one that has already been said.

Used in a sentence:
 I can't afford a dog. Moreover, my landlord doesn't allow pets in the apartments.
 Smoking is a bad habit; moreover, it is a very expensive.
 I don't know what happened at the party last night and, furthermore , I don't want to know.

3 Therefore

Therefore means ‘for that reason’.

Used in a sentence:
 You had no real knowledge and therefore no way to make a wise decision. 
 The water in the pot is boiling, so therefore the water must be very hot.

4 However

Used to introduce a statement that contrasts with or seems to contradict something


that has been said previously.

Use in a sentence:
 People tend to put on weight in middle age. However, gaining weight is not inevitable.
 However hard she tried, nothing seemed to work. 
 This was not an easy decision. It is, however, a decision that we feel is dictated by our
duty.

5 On one hand... On the other hand…

When you are comparing two different facts or two opposite ways of thinking about
a situation.

Used in a sentence:
 On the one hand I'd like a job that pays more, but on the other hand I enjoy the work I'm
doing at the moment.

6 Despite – In spite of - Although

Mean ‘without being affected by’, ‘without taking any notice of or being influenced by’.

Used in a sentence:
 I still enjoyed the week despite the weather.
 He managed to eat a big lunch despite having eaten an enormous breakfast.
 She walked home by herself, although she knew that it was dangerous.
 In spite of his injury, Ricardo will play in Saturday’s game.

7 Unless

Used to introduce the case in which a statement being made is not true or valid.

Used in a sentence:
 You can't get a job unless you have experience.
 Unless you call me to say you're not coming, I'll see you at the theatre.
 Most wild animals won't attack unless they are provoked.

8 Instead of

It is used to introduce a substitute or an alternative.

Used in a sentence:
 You can go instead of me, if you want.
 Instead of complaining, why don't we try to change things?

9 In order to

With the aim or purpose of doing something.

Used in a sentence:
 He came home early in order to see the children before they went to bed.
 I study in order to pass all exams.

10 Otherwise

You use otherwise to connect two clauses where the second clause shows what
would have happened if the first clause hadn't happened.

Used in a sentence:
 I missed the bus. Otherwise, I would have been here earlier. 
 I'd better write it down, otherwise I'll forget it.

11 As a result – As a consequence -
Consequently
Used in a sentence:
 He sprained his wrist and, as a result, he will not be playing in the tournament.
 flexible workers find themselves in great demand, and consequently gain high salaries.

12 Due to – Because of – Owing to

They all mean ‘caused by’.

Used in a sentence:
 evening classes were cancelled due to heavy snow
 The concert has been suspended owing to lack of interest.

13 Generally speaking (bonus)

Used to say that a statement describes a general feeling or opinion relating to or


affecting all the people or things in a group.

Use in a sentence:
 There are many options I love on the menu, but generally speaking, I order the chicken.
 The doctor explained that generally speaking, the medication helps take away some of the
worst side effects.
