Learning Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students are
expected to:

1. identify the attributes of a global city; and

2. analyze how cities serve as engines of

globalization;
Global City

Cities are the core of modernization and

industries.
They are arranged distinctively, relying upon the
part they play in the global scene.

An urban center must prove it takes a

substantial global lead over other cities.
Global City
A global city or world city
proposes that globalization can be separated as
far as vital geographic areas.

Global City, as the most complex element with

linkages that restricts a city will have an impact
on worldwide issues beyond financial means and
impact regarding society or legislative issues.
Global City
An urban center that enjoys substantial economical
advantages and serves as a hub within a globalized
economic structures.

Connected with globalization, these urban centers

are the key source inside worldwide systems of
production, finance, and media communications.

Worldwide city proposals are viewed as the building

pieces of globalization.
Global City
Ascent to the worldwide urban areas has
connected with two globalization-related
patterns:

1. extension of the part of transnational

corporations (TNCs) in worldwide production
trends

2. decay of large scale manufacturing and the

accompanying rise of adaptable generation
focused inside urban territories.
Global City

The two patterns clarify the rise of systems of

specific urban communities serving the monetary
and administration prerequisites of TNCs.

Different urban communities endures

deindustrialization and neglect to wind up
worldwide.

Global cities consequently end up compelling

summon and coordination posts for TNCs inside a
globalizing world economy.
Global City
Urban communities accepted an administration part
at the neighbourhood scale and inside more extensive
designs which few analysts named “glocalization” of
state foundations.

Glocalization describes the phenomenon where a

product or service was developed and produced for
global consumption and accomodated the needs of a
local market.

Examples of glocalization:
London and New York’s financial districts
Silicone Valley

Reasons of Increase In
Global Cities
Increase of globalization cities is linked to:
 globalization of economies and;
 centralization of mass production within urban centers.

It led to the emergence of networks of activities that

seek to fulfil the service and financial requirements of
multinationals. The cities grows to become global while
other suffer deindustrialization or stagnation of their
communities.
Reasons of Increase In
Global Cities
Criticisms of Global Cities
According to Kiprop (2017), global cities have been
accused of focusing their reach to other global cities and
neglecting cities within the national outreach. These cities
are more connected to the outside world than to their
domestic economy and they’re always in a competitive
state.
Reasons of Increase In
Global Cities
Cities as Engines of Globalization
Biggest metropolitan areas provide a large, diverse
economic base for modern service and other innovative
industries.

It is in cities that global operations are centralized and

where we can see most clearly the phenomena associated
with their activities (Vliet, 2001).

The characteristics of cities and their surrounding regions

help shape globalization.
Reasons of Increase In
Global Cities
Cities as Engines of Globalization
The characteristics of cities and their surrounding regions
help shape globalization by providing a suitable labor force,
contributing financial incentives and possessing the
institutional capacity without which globalization cannot
occur, and etc.

Cities mediate reciprocal relationships between economic

globalization and human development. It forms an
important link in processes of globalization and their
implications for human development (Vliet, 2001).
Globalizing Cities:
Challenges
Common difficulties that global cities experience.

 Lack of an integrated planning framework in many urban

areas taking into account the inter-permeability of cities;

 Multiplicity of local bodies obstructing efficient planning

and land use; rigid master plans and restrictive zoning
regulations that limits the land available for building, which
constrict the cities’ opportunity to grow in accordance with
changing needs;
Globalizing Cities:
Challenges
Common difficulties that global cities experience.

 Increasing vulnerability to climate change and disasters

and infrastructure deficit. Increasing prosperity amidst
poverty, inequality, inter-city strife/ political conflicts,
displacement, migration, and need for social protection
mechanisms.
