The Problem of the Study

Based on the background of study, the writer proposes in


the following problem:

"Isthere any significant effect of applying Text Features


Strategy on Students' Reading Comprehension on
Expository Text?"

The Objective of the Study

The main objective of the study is to find out the


empirical evidence about the effect of applying text
features strategy on Students' Reading
Comprehension on expository text. The detail
objective of this study is to investigate whether there
is significant effect of applying text features strategy
on students' reading comprehension on expository
text especially in informational texts of English
textbook.
The Scope and Limitation of the Study
 This study is focused on examining the effect of applying text features
strategy on Students' Reading Comprehension on expository text. It is
conducted for tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Harvard Medan. This
study is conducted using pre-test, post-test and observation, so that
writer can find out how much influence applying text features strategy
on students' reading comprehension for the tenth- grade students of
Harvard Senior High School, Medan. The Expository text used in this
study is in the form of informational texts in English textbook.

The population of this study is tenth grade students of SMA
Harvard Medan

Sample Of Study
In this research, the writer takes the sample by using random
sampling. The sample of this study consists of two classes. The
experimental class is X MIA students and the controlled class is
X MIB students.

Treatment
The steps for implementing the text features strategy are:

The teacher explains the students expository text and text features trategy

The teacher gives example of expository text to students

The teacher asks students to read the informational text using text features reading strategy

The teacher gives the questions that have been set for students

The teaches asks the students to answer the questions

Teachers and students discuss questions that have not been understood

The teacher provides feedback on students' work

In this study, the writer uses reading tests as the main instrument, includes pre-test and
post-test. The text used in this study is the informational texts in English textbook such as
Biography of B.J Habibie and Cut Nyak Dhien. There are 25 multiple choices test
Research questions. The score of multiple choices is 1 for each correct item and 0 for incorrect items.
Instrument The students' total score then times with 4 in order to get a hundred (perfect score).

technique of Data Collection

Data collection is carried out using students' test results. The form of reading text is
informational texts in English textbook. Data collection is carried out with some steps.
Firstly, Students are directed to read reading expository text about informational texts in
their English textbook such as Earthquake, B. J. Habibie biography and Cut Nyak Dien
biography topics. These texts are used in the pre-test and post-test. The pre-test is given to
the control class and the experimental class

After the data is collected
from the pre-test and post-

Reliability and Validity of Instruments

The reliability test of this study uses the Kuder Richardson 20 formula and
the validity of the study uses Bivariate Pearson Correlation (Person
Moment Product) by Sugiyono (2018: 186).
