SUBJECT: SCIENCE

UNIT/SUB-TOPIC: Sound Waves

WEEK: WEEK 2

DATE: 11th May, 2023.

MR ADIGE.
Starter:

Starter A:
Why do we have different sounds
when singing?
Vocabulary:

⚫Volume, pitch, particles, source, medium, wave

TOPIC:Magnetism

⚫WALT :

⚫Describe sound volume.

⚫Describe sound pitch.
⚫Describe terms of high or low pitch and loud or
quiet volume..
⚫SUCCESS CRITERIA:

⚫I can describe sound volume.

⚫I can describe sound pitch.
⚫I can describe high or low pitch and loud or
quiet volume.
DIRECT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER INPUT (pair/share
throughout the lesson)
Volume

The volume of a sound is how loud or quiet it is. Volume is measured

in decibels and ranges from 0 to 120. At 0 decibels, a sound is barely
audible, while at 120 decibels, a sound is very loud. Volume can be
increased or decreased using an amplifier.
Pitch

The pitch of a sound is how high or low it is. Pitch is measured in

Hertz and ranges from 20 to 20,000. At 20 Hertz, a sound is very low,
while at 20,000 Hertz, a sound is very high. Pitch can be adjusted
using equalizers and filters.
Loud and Quiet Sounds

Loud sounds are sounds that are above 70 decibels. These can be
uncomfortable to the ears and can cause hearing damage if exposed
for too long. Quiet sounds are sounds that are below 70 decibels.
These are comfortable and safe for the ears.
High and Low Pitch

High pitched sounds are sounds that are above 2000 Hertz. These
can be uncomfortable to the ears and can cause hearing damage if
exposed for too long. Low pitched sounds are sounds that are below
2000 Hertz. These are comfortable and safe for the ears.
Amplitude and volume.
Which of these sounds would be louder?
A B
2 cm
1 cm

⚫Sound B is louder than sound A.

⚫Wave B has greater height meaning larger vibrations.
⚫Wave height is called amplitude.
Higher amplitude = bigger vibrations = higher volume
Frequency and pitch.
Which of these sounds has a higher pitch?

X Y

1.5 wave 3 wave

cycles cycles

• Sound Y is higher pitched than X.

• Y has more complete waves (vibrations) per second.
• Number of waves per second is called frequency.
Higher frequency = faster vibrations = higher pitch
SHARED/INTERACTIVE INSTRUCTION

Measuring Sound Volume

You will need: a sound meter and ways to make different sounds
such as clapping hands, blowing a whistle, slamming a door, a
talking class.

• Predict which sound will be the loudest

• Plan how you will record the sounds.
• How will you make sure the test is fair.
• Carry out the investigation and record each sound.
SHARED/INTERACTIVE INSTRUCTION

Measuring Sound Volume

Questions

• Which sound was loudest?

• Which sound was quietest?
• Where your predictions correct?
• What was the dependent variable? Explain.
• Explain why some sounds are loud and others are quiet.
