Clean Water

The Importance of
Clean Water

• Clean water is essential for human survival and the well-

being of our planet. It is a basic human right to have
access to clean water, yet many people around the world
still lack this fundamental resource.
• Water pollution is a major threat to clean water sources.
Industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and improper
disposal of household chemicals all contribute to the
contamination of our waterways. This not only affects
human health but also harms aquatic life and
ecosystems.
The Consequences of Water Pollution
• Water pollution can have serious consequences for both humans and wildlife.
Contaminated water can cause illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid fever. It
can also lead to long-term health problems such as cancer and neurological disorders.
• In addition to harming human health, water pollution can devastate ecosystems. Fish and
other aquatic animals can die off due to lack of oxygen or exposure to toxic chemicals.
This can have a ripple effect throughout the food chain, ultimately affecting human
populations as well.
Solutions for Clean
Water
• There are several solutions to combat water
pollution and ensure access to clean water.
One solution is to implement stricter
regulations on industrial and agricultural
practices to prevent contamination of water
sources. Another solution is to invest in better
wastewater treatment facilities to properly
dispose of household and industrial waste.
• Individuals can also take steps to reduce water
pollution. This includes properly disposing of
household chemicals, conserving water, and
reducing the use of single-use plastics that
often end up in our waterways.
The Global Water
Crisis
• The lack of access to clean water is a global crisis
affecting millions of people around the world.
According to the World Health Organization, over 2
billion people lack access to safe drinking water.
• This crisis disproportionately affects marginalized
communities, particularly in developing countries.
Women and children are often burdened with the task
of collecting water, which can be time-consuming and
dangerous. Lack of access to clean water also
contributes to poverty and economic inequality.
The Role of Technology in Clean
Water
• Technology plays a crucial role in ensuring access to clean water. Advanced water treatment
technologies can remove contaminants and make water safe for consumption. Solar-powered
water pumps can provide access to clean water in remote areas without electricity.
• Innovative solutions such as fog harvesting and atmospheric water generators can also provide
access to clean water in areas with limited water sources. It is important to continue investing in
and developing these technologies to ensure access to clean water for all.
The Call to Action for
Clean Water
• Access to clean water is a basic
human right that should be
guaranteed for all. It is up to
individuals, governments, and
organizations to take action to
combat water pollution and ensure
access to clean water.This can
include supporting policies and
initiatives that promote clean water,
reducing personal water usage and
waste, and donating to
organizations working towards
providing access to clean water in
marginalized communities.
Together, we can make a difference
and ensure a future with clean
water for all.
• In many populated areas in Macedonia, contaminated water flows from the

Watter pollution in
taps. Macedonia still has a long way to go to fully protect the waters from the
harmful impact of human activities.Rivers and other bodies of water, besides
being polluted by the constant dumping of tons of municipal waste into them,
Macedonia are also polluted in many other ways, so sewage from human settlements is
not the only polluter. But solving the problem with municipal waste leads to
the ultimate goal - water protection. Wastewater treatment systems are
particularly important for humans because there is a major health risk from
the enormous daily production of wastewater.Macedonia has eight
purification stations: two purification stations in Vranishta for the regions of
Ohrid, Struga, Trpejca, Peshtani and Lagadin built in 1985 and 1988 for
mechanical and biological water purification, in Dojran built in 1989 for
mechanical, biological and chemical purification of the waters, in Sveti Nikole
and Makedonski Brod built in 2000, in Resen for the area of Jankovec, Tsarev
Dvor and Ezerani built in 2005 for mechanical and biological water
purification, in Kumanovo and Krivogastani built in 2007 and in Berovo built in
2010. Almost none of these treatment plants are operational or only partially
operational because their maintenance is very expensive.
Water pollution
on Tikvesh Lake
• Tikveš plain is situated in central North
Macedonia. It is known for an artificial
lake, which is the site of the Tikveš
Hydroelectric Power Station. It is home
to the towns of Kavadarci and Negotino.
Famous for its wine, Tikveš is the center
of the Macedonian wine production
which has been cultivated for more than
120 years. The region is also famous for
its yogurt and sour milk.
Environment on
Tikvesh lake

• The lake forms the centre of a 25,500

ha tract, encompassing arable land,
forest, shrubland and wetland, that has
been designated an Important Bird Area
(IBA) by BirdLife International because it
supports populations of rock partridges,
black storks, Eurasian eagle-owls,
Egyptian vultures, short-toed snake-
eagles, golden eagles, lesser kestrels,
eastern subalpine warblers, western
rock nuthatches, eastern black-eared
wheatears and black-headed buntings.
Tikvesh Lake
• "TIKVESH LAKE RECEIVES ITS WATERS FROM THE CRNA RIVER, WHICH IS
THE LARGEST TRIBUTARY OF THE VARDAR RIVER, WHICH HAS THE
LARGEST BASIN, ALONG THE VARDAR RIVER. WATER FLOWS INTO THE
LAKE FROM THE MOUNTAINS, A SMALL PART OF KOZHUV, THEN FROM
KOZJAK, NIDZE WITH KAYMAKCHALAN, FROM BABA MOUNTAIN WITH
PELISTER, UNDER BIGLA, ILINSKA MOUNTAIN, FROM DAUTICA, ALL OF
PELAGONIA, ALL OF DIMIR HISAR. ALL THAT WATER FLOWS INTO CRNA
AND COMES TO OUR WATER AFTER THE SKOCIVIR GORGE. BUT ALL THOSE
WATERS COLLECT WITH THEM ALL THE INGREDIENTS CREATED
BY AGRICULTURE, EMITTED BY THE SETTLEMENTS AND INDUSTRY OF
BITOLA, PRILEP, LERIN, KRUSHEVO, THE THERMAL POWER PLANT AND
150,000 HA OF AGRICULTURAL LAND.

Pollution of Tikvesh
Lake
• ALTHOUGH VARIOUS INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES HAVE CHANGED
OVER THE YEARS IN THE REGION THAT COVERS THE CATCHMENT
AREA OF LAKE TIKVESH, THE QUALITY OF THE WATER HAS NOT
IMPROVED. LISICHANEC GOT HOPE THAT SOMETHING WILL
CHANGE, AFTER THE REVALUATION OF THE SITUATION WITH THE
“TIKVESH” PROTECTED ZONE, WHICH INCLUDES MOST OF THE
TIKVESH LAKE, WAS DONE IN 2010, BUT EVEN THEN THINGS DID
NOT CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.
What do we use
the water from • The water from Lake Tikvesh is used for irrigation and
for obtaining electricity. Irrigation is carried out through

Lake Tikvesh the "Tikvesh" hydrosystem, and the "Tikvesh"

hydropower plant was built near the dam.

for?
• Lake Tikvesh has three permanent islands. The largest one is called Gradiste,
Islands on the covers an area of 2.3 hectares and is not inhabited. It is covered with dense
forest, and remains of former buildings can be seen, after which it was
lake named. The other two are small islands with houses and related facilities, at
a very short distance from the coast. One is in the atar of Brušani, and the
other at the outflow of the lake into the river Blašnica.
What are we doing
to save the lake?
• Measures are taken to maintain the water level of the
lake and environmental actions are regularly held around
the coast of the lake.
• Preventing the introduction of polluted substances into
aquatic ecosystems
• Organization of closed systems of wastewater treatment
and multiple use of the same water in technological
processes, in industry and other facilities.
• Purification of waste water by mechanical, physico-
chemical and biological methods. In this sense, various
water purification stations are being built.
• The care of water protection must be carried out by
every individual because it is common knowledge that
without water there is no life
