Grand Woman of the Revolution and Mother of Balintawak

One of the most famous heroines in Philippine


history was born at Banlat, Balintawak, Quezon
City (formerly Barrio Banlat, Kalookan) on
January 6, 1812. Melchora Aquino, widely known
by Tandang Sora, was a teacher and a healer who Click icon to add picture

an active member of the Katipunan, a secret
society that fought for Philippine independence.

Tandang Sora never attended school. However, she


was apparently literate at an early age and
talented as a singer and performed at local events
as well as at Mass for her Church.

IN 1896, TANDANG SORA JOINED THE PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION
AGAINST SPANISH COLONIAL RULE. SHE PROVIDED SHELTER,
FOOD, AND MEDICAL CARE TO WOUNDED REVOLUTIONARIES.
SHE ALSO USED HER KNOWLEDGE OF HERBAL MEDICINE TO
TREAT THE SICK AND WOUNDED.
TANDANG SORA WAS ALSO A LEADER IN THE REVOLUTION. SHE
ORGANIZED RALLIES AND MEETINGS TO ENCOURAGE SUPPORT
FOR THE REVOLUTION. SHE WAS KNOWN FOR HER COURAGE
AND DETERMINATION TO FIGHT FOR THE FREEDOM OF HER
PEOPLE.

Imprisonment and Legacy
THE ARREST OF MELCHORA AQUINO
In 1897, Tandang Sora was arrested by Spanish authorities and
imprisoned in a convent in Intramuros. She was released in 1899 after
the Spanish-American War but was soon arrested again by the American
military.
Tandang Sora was released in 1902 but was placed under house arrest for
the remainder of her life. Despite her imprisonment, she continued to
provide

HERO
Tandang Sora passed away in 1919 at the age of 107. She is remembered
as a symbol of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Her legacy
lives on in the Philippines, where she is honored as a national hero.
