• A linear inequality in two variables can be
written in one of four forms:
Ax + By > C Ax + By ≥ C
Ax + By < C Ax + By ≤ C
Where A, B and C are real numbers, a ≠ 0 and b ≠ 0.
• An ordered pair (x, y) is a solution of an inequality in two
variables, if a TRUE statement results when the variables
in the inequality are replaced by the coordinates of the
ordered pair.
SOLUTIONS OF AN INEQUALITY
Determine whether each ordered pair is a solution of 4x + 5y > 20.

1.(2, 5) 2. (-4, 6) 3. (-8, 12)

4x + 5y > 20 4x + 5y > 20 4x + 5y > 20
4(2) + 5(5) > 20 4(-4) + 5(6) > 20 4(-8) + 5(12) > 20
8 + 25 > 20 -16 + 30 > 20 -32 + 60 > 20
33 > 20 14 > 20 28 > 20
TRUE FALSE TRUE
Hence, (2, 5) is a Hence, (-4, 6) is NOT Hence, (-8, 12) is a
solution of the a solution of the solution of the
inequality. inequality. inequality.

3. y = 25 x 8. x > -8
4. x ≤ 2y + 5 9. 9(x – 2) < 15
5. 7(x - 3) < 4y 10. 13x + 6 < 10 – 7y
