THE OPIUM WAR
The 1st Opium War was a conflict fought between the United Kingdom and
the Qing dynasty of China in the mid-19th century. The main cause of the
war was the British trade of opium, a highly addictive narcotic drug, to
China. Despite the Qing government’s attempts to ban the importation of
opium, the trade continued to flourish, leading to widespread addiction
and social problems in China.
In 1839, the Qing government seized a large quantity of Opium stored
in the British-run port city of Canton and demanded that the British
stop the trade. The Qing government declared war on Britain, when
British refused.
The 1st Opium War had a profound impact on China, as it marked the
beginning of a period of economic, political, and cultural decline that
lasted for several decades.
