Addition and Subtraction of

Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Objectives:
 add simple fractions and mixed numbers.

 subtract simple fractions and mixed numbers.

 solve routine and non-routine problems involving

addition and/or subtraction of fractions using
appropriate problem-solving strategies and
tools.
Addition and Subtraction of Simple Fractions

Similar Fractions – fractions with the same denominators

Add or subtract the numerators and copy common denominators.

Examples:

3 + 1 = 4 3 - 1 = 2
5 5 5 5 5 5
Dissimilar Fractions –
fractions with different
denominators
1. Multiply the denominators.
2. Cross multiply.
3. Add or subtract then simplify when necessary.
Example:

3 - 1 = 6-5 = 1
5 2 10 10
Try this for 1 minute

2 + 1 = 6 + 7 = 13
7 3 21 21

Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Numbers
Mixed Numbers - whole numbers combined with fractions.
1. Add or subtract the whole numbers.

2. If the fractions have same denominators, follow the

rules for adding and subtracting similar fractions.

3. If the fractions do not have the same denominators,

follow the rules for adding and subtracting
dissimilar fractions.

4. Simplify if necessary.

Example:

1 1 5 5
1 + 2 =(1+2)+ 6 = 3 6
3 2
Try this!!

1 1= 7 7
2 + 12 = 212
3 + 2 4
