Life Cycles

Do Plants reproduce?

 Plants reproduce so they have a life cycle

 Why do they have to reproduce?

Seed Dispersal
Germination

Fertilisation Growth

Pollination
Germination

 The seed swells and a new plant starts to grow

 A seed needs water and the right temperature to
germinate

Pollination
Growth

 The plant forces through the soil and grows towards the
sunlight
 For this to happen, the plant needs water, nutrients from
the soil and sunlight

Pollination
Pollination

 When pollen from the Anther of one flower is transferred

to the Stigma of another flower
 This can be done by wind or by insects

Seed Dispersal

 Seeds need to get as far away as possible from their

parent plant so that they do not have to compete for
resources
 Seeds are lots of different shapes and can be dispersed
by animals, wind, water and mini-explosions
Seeds- TPS

 Do parent plants want their offspring really close by?

 Why?

 How can seeds be dispersed?

Seeds can be dispersed:

 By Animals on their fur, by the burying the seeds and by

eating the seeds and leaving them behind in dung

 By Wind

 By Water

 By mini-explosions
Seed examples

 Have a look at the seeds and think about how they are
dispersed.

 Put them into 3 groups, wind dispersal or animal

dispersal or other
