INVESTIGATORY Addition by
PROJECT PhET Simulation
CERTIFICATE
This is to certify that , a student of Class XI
SCIENCE, has successfully completed the research on
the topic “Vector addition by PhET simulation” under
the guidance of Mrs. G. Lily Jebamalar (subject teacher)
during the year 2022-2023 in partial fulfillment of
Physics practical examination.

ABOUT PhET SIMULATION
The name "PhET" was originally an acronym for
"Physics Education Technology”. PhET provides
fun, free, interactive, research-based science and
mathematics simulations. PhET simulations are
particularly effective to help students make sense of
scientific concepts, real-world experiences, and engage
in scientific inquiry. A common way to include inquiry
in use of the PhET simulations is by asking students to
predict what will happen next.
EXPERIMENTS
Vector Addition in 1-D

Here, three vectors a, b, c, each of magnitude 9.0, 7.0, 11.0, are taken in 1-D,
i.e., taking into consideration only the x-axis, and their sum is calculated.
Vector Addition in 2-D

In this experiment, two vectors can be added together by placing them

together in such a way that the first vector’s head joins the tail of the
second vector. Thus, by joining the first vector’s tail to the head of the
second vector, we can obtain the resultant vector sum. Here, vector a
having magnitude 10 and vector b having magnitude 10 are added and
their resultant vector is s having magnitude 14.1.
VECTOR ADDITION IN 3-D

Here, there are three vectors a, b and c and sum of

magnitude of a and b is equal to C. Value of vector a is 5 and
of vector b is 7.1 . If vector a is multiplied with 2, its
magnitude becomes 10. Hence the value of c comes to 15.8.
VECTOR ADDITION IN LAB

In this experiment, two types of vectors can be added together as many times
as you wish by placing them together in such a way that the first vector’s head
joins the tail of the second vector. Thus, by joining the first vector’s tail to the
head of the second vector, we can obtain the resultant vector sum. Here, for the
first type, vector a having magnitude 12 and vector b having magnitude 13 are
added and their resultant vector is s having magnitude 22.Here,for the first type,
vector a having magnitude 10 and vector b having magnitude 9 are added and
their resultant vector is s having magnitude 17. Here, if you wish you can also
view the angles of the vectors.
