Abstract

The DTS-i engine is a technology developed by Bajaj Auto that

promises to deliver better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and
improved performance. This technology has revolutionized the two-
wheeler industry and has become a popular choice among bike
enthusiasts. In this presentation, we will dive deep into the workings
of the DTS-i engine and explore its various components,
advantages, and limitations. By the end of this presentation, you will
have a clear understanding of how the DTS-i engine woks and what
makes it stand out from the rest.
Introduction

The DTS-i engine is a patented technology developed by Bajaj

Auto, one of the leading two-wheeler manufacturers in India. DTS-i
stands for Digital Twin Spark Ignition, which is a unique ignition
system that uses two spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the
engine cylinder. This technology was first introduced in 2003 and
has since become a popular choice among bike enthusiasts for its
superior performance and fuel efficiency. In this presentation, we
will explore the various components of the DTS-i engine and how
they work together to deliver a smooth and powerful ride
WHAT IS DTSI

 DTSI means Digital Twin Spark Ignition system.

 It has Two Spark Plugs that are use to ignite the charge in the combustion chamber.
 The Twin Spark Plugs ensure faster and better combustion.
 In this system the spark timing is controlled by a computer that continuously adjust
ignition timing to obtain Optimum combustion.
WHY IS IT USED

 In conventional engines the air-fuel mixture

does not get combusted completely. So We use
DTSI technology.
 To reduce dependence on mechanical system
for controls.
 For more accurate and precise ignition timing.
OPERATING PRINCIPLE

 In the DTSI system a timer is employed in the distributor instead

of contact breaker.
 This timer may be a pulse generator which triggers the ignition
module, also called electronic control unit. (E.C.U.)
 This control unit primarily contains transistor circuit whose base
current is triggered off & on by timer which result in starting &
stopping of primary current.
 Other than this, the electronic ignition system work similar to the
conventional electrical point- type system
COMPONENTS

 MICROPROCESSORS/CPU : It has taken over many of the

tasks in cars that were formerly performed by vacuum,
mechanical or electromechanically devices. When properly
programmed, they can carry out explicit operations with
blinding speeds and almost flawless consistent.
 POSITION SENSORS: The CPU receives feedback from
the sensors and checks along the programmed value.
Depending on the input, the computer will control the
actuators until the programmed results are obtained.
COMPONENTS

 A/D CONVERTER: Output of some position sensor is in the

analog form while computer can only read in digital form. To
overcome this communication problem all analog voltage are
converted in digital format by a device known as an analog to
digital converter. This produces a digital wave signal that can
directly go to the CPU.
ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM
 The ignition system on the Twin spark is a digital system with static
spark advance and no moving parts subject to wear. It is mapped by the
integrated digital electronic control box which also handles fuel injection
and valve timing. It features two plugs per cylinder.
 This innovative solution, also entailing a special configuration of the
hemispherical combustion chambers and piston heads, ensures a fast,
wide flame front when the air-fuel mixture is ignited, and therefore less
ignition advance, enabling, moreover, relatively lean mixtures to be used.
WORKING

 Digital Twin Spark ignition engine has two Spark plugs located at
opposite ends of the combustion chamber and hence fast and
efficient combustion is obtained.
 The benefits of this efficient combustion process can be felt in
terms of better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
 The ignition system on the Twin spark is a digital system with

which also handles fuel injection and valve timing. It features
two plugs per cylinder.
• This innovative solution, also entailing a special configuration of the
hemispherical combustion chambers and piston heads, ensures a fast,
wide flame front when the air-fuel mixture is ignited, and therefore less
ignition advance, enabling, moreover, relatively lean mixtures to be
used.
• This technology provides a combination of the light weight and twice
the power offered by two-stroke engines with a significant power boost,
i.e. a considerable "power-to-weight ratio" compared to quite a few
four-stroke engines.
ADVANTAGES
 Less vibrations and noise.
 Long life of the engine parts such as piston rings and valve stem.
 Decrease in the specific fuel consumption.
 No over heating.
 Increase the Thermal Efficiency of the Engine & even bear high loads on it.
 Better starting of engine even in winter season & cold climatic conditions or
at very low temperatures because of increased Compression ratio.
 Because of twin Sparks the diameter of the flame increases rapidly that would
result in instantaneous burning of fuels. Thus force exerted on the piston
would increase leading to better work output.
DISADVANTAGES.
 There is high NOx emission.
 If one spark plug get damaged then we have to replace both.
 The cost is relatively more
References

 This technology is presently being used by one of the

largest two wheeler manufacturers of India Bajaj Ltd.
 They have a Patent of this technology which gives them an
edge over the competitors.
 They have implemented this in most of their product line
up.
 PULSAR SERIES, DISCOVER RANGE.
