BLACK COTTON SOIL
 Black cotton soil was taken from the agricultural areas, Ramireddy kottallu, valluru (mandal),
Kadapa (dist) in India.
 Black cotton soil are inorganic clays of medium to high compressibility and from a major soil
group in India. They are called as such because of their dark brown color and suitability of growing
cotton. They are characterized by high shrinkage and swelling properties. Through black cotton soils
are very fertile soils, they are not good in road or construction foundation. Because of its high
swelling and shrinkage characteristics, the black cotton soil has been challenge to engineers.
 The black cotton soil is very hard when dry, but loses its strength completely when in wet condition.
The roads laid on BC soil bases develop undulations at the road surface due to loss of strength of the
sub grade through softening during Manson. The black color in BC soil is due clay which is
predominantly montmourillonite in structure and black or blackish grey in color. The physical
properties of BC soil vary from place to place.
GENERAL PROPERTIES OF BLACK COTTON SOIL

S.NO Property Value

1 Dry density 1300-1800(kg/m3)

STONE DUST
 Stone dust for the study was taken from stone industry ,ramapuram , rayachoti (mandal), india.
Stone dust used in study was sieved throught 75 micron sieve.stone dust was randomly mixed
with samples in 2%, 4%,6% of the dry weight of the soil.

 PROPERTIES OF STONE DUST

 Texture
 Structure
 Bulk density
 Permeability
 Pore space
USES OF STONE DUST
Stone dust is one of the waste material from stone industries, those are generally used for many
purposes.

 Stone dust is used in construction fields as aggregates.

 Stone dust are also used in concrete cubes for increasing strength properties .
 Stone dust is economical.
 Stone dust is used as as admixture for several purposes.
LIME
 Lime can be used to treat soils in order to improve their workability and load-bearing
characteristics in a number of situations.
 Quick lime is frequently used to dry wet soils at construction and sites else where, reducing
downtime and providing an improved working surface.
 An even more significant use of lime is in the modification and stabilisation of soil beneath road
and similar construction project.
 Lime can be substantially increase the stability, impermeability and load bearing capacity of the
subgrade.
 Both quick lime and hydrated lime may be used for this purpose.
 Application of lime to subgrades can provide significantly improved engineering properties.
TESTS FOR SOIL
The following are tests which were conducted for identification and classification of soil IS 1498:1970.
