BLACK COTTON SOIL
Black cotton soil was taken from the agricultural areas, Ramireddy kottallu, valluru (mandal),
Kadapa (dist) in India.
Black cotton soil are inorganic clays of medium to high compressibility and from a major soil
group in India. They are called as such because of their dark brown color and suitability of growing
cotton. They are characterized by high shrinkage and swelling properties. Through black cotton soils
are very fertile soils, they are not good in road or construction foundation. Because of its high
swelling and shrinkage characteristics, the black cotton soil has been challenge to engineers.
The black cotton soil is very hard when dry, but loses its strength completely when in wet condition.
The roads laid on BC soil bases develop undulations at the road surface due to loss of strength of the
sub grade through softening during Manson. The black color in BC soil is due clay which is
predominantly montmourillonite in structure and black or blackish grey in color. The physical
properties of BC soil vary from place to place.
