OVERVIEW
-Bharat Bhavan is situated at J. Swaminathan marg, Shamia Hills (Near
Upper Lake) Bhopal.

This institution was built to celebrate the culture output of Madhya


Pradesh.an initiative taken by the Indion Goverment.

It was inaugurated by Indira Ganani in 1982.

The design establish a modern architectural style specific to India.

CONTEXT
CLIMATE
- Composite climate
-Average temperatue 16-30 degrees
-Hot summers, mild & dry winters and humid monsoons.

-Built into a hillside which slopes towards a lake, a series of terraces &
courtyards comprise the complex.
Upon entering the choice of the path of terraces or moving down the three
courtyards. The inside of the complex is a medley of courtyards.
split-level exhibition spaces,galleries and performance rooms.
The visitors enter the highest level and walk down a pedestrain
spine.flanked by a pattern of courtyards.

CONTOUR ANALYSIS
-the site is on a gentle sloping plateau, overlooking the Upper Lake, Bhopal.
-natural contours are well integrated with the buliding terraces and courtyards
-visitors can walk through open spaces
enclosed by the terrace gardens on the roots & cooling the underneath structure.
- entrances direct the visitors through open sky courtyard to create a community interaction
with open spaces around

DESIGN CONCEPT
-Based on the idea of "non-building, only a glimse of the structure is seen from the entrance as it there is no building at all.
due to sloping terrain, building unfiods itself when on walks in gradually leveling down.
-series of courts and terrace gardens are inspired from india village setting.

The grid consist of group of 4 columns at distance of 2 meters each. -the group is placed at distance of 9 meter from each other.
this structural framework is adopted throughout the building.

FORM OF THE BUILDING
-The building form is unique and kept simple based on the column grid.
-The auditorium unique design of RCC shell which has a skylight on top for natural
light to enter.
-The enclosed areas are grouped around the sunken courtyards and sits on varied
plinths.
-The building is organised an "regular formal square

LANDSCAPING
Roots are covered with grass keeping the building cooler
Open to sky courtyrad are made to manage the crowd.
Landscape is built from itself that gently terminates at the lakefronfroming into a amphitheatre
The steps in the coutyard are designed and inspired from the
Indian architecture of ghats.

INTERNAL CIRCULATION
-The routes through the terraces encourages the movemet down to the sites natural
gradient, with the courtyard providing tranquil spaces for rest and relaxation.
the relationship between these components creates an ebb and flow of energy which is
described as " THE RITUALISTIC PATHWAY"

SCALE AND PROPORTION


-The scale and proportion of the building human to nature.
The individual square module is repeated forms a larger instituional scale. The entrance of the courtyard is
made by extending a horizontal band across two build masses creating a sense of entering

BUILDING MATERIALS

• 600 x 600 mm grid with gap for grass. -ceiling inisde the gallery is precast coffer slab, with
provision of skylight & Italian fiberglass are places at roof level and cell for natural light.
• terrace is covered with 250 mm brickbat cement mortar over this 50 mm hard metal fiber & at last
170 mm earth filled for lawn.
