TEST INSTRUMENT
NEEDLE POINTER

• Indicate the value read on the scale.

INFINITY KNOB

• Used to calibrate the needle to point to zero scale the left

side.
RANGE

• Provides more accurate measurement especially with

small values.
TEST PROBE

• Used to connect the multi-tester to the components to be

measured.
RANGE SELECTOR

• Used to change function and scales.

ZERO OHM ADJUSTER

• Used to calibrate the needle to point to the zero scale on

the right side.
SCALE

• Shows the value of what is being measured.

•What is VOM or Volt-Ohm-
Milliammeter?
• One of the instrument use to test a circuit and/ or component
and measure its value is an analog multi-tester or VOM-Volt-
ohm-milliammeter. It also utilized to test condition of an
electronic component whether it is good of defective.
1. When making an in-circuit voltage measurements, be sure
that the circuit is ON.
2. Set the selector knob of the VOM to the highest voltage range
when measuring unknown voltages.
3. For known voltages, set the VOM range switch a little higher
than the expected voltage to be measured to have clear and
accurate voltage reading.
4. Avoid to touching the metallic parts of the test leads to avoid
any electric shock when measuring high voltage.
5. Connect the test leads of the VOM across the voltage source or
load:
a. For AC voltage, no need to observe proper polarity, meaning
you can connect any of the test leads to the meter to the voltage
source in any polarity.
b. For DC voltage, you have to observe proper polarity. The black
test lead (-COM) must be connected to the negative terminal of the
voltage source and the red test lead (+COM) to the positive
terminal of the voltage source.
6. Disconnect at least one of the test lead when shifting to the
different voltage range to avoid spark within the switch contact that
might damage the range switch of the VOM.
7. Position your eyes perpendicular to the meter/needle pointer.
