A, B, C

A “How long have you been away from the country? Laruja asked Ibarra.
” Almost seven years”.
“Then you have forgotten all about it.”
“Quite the contrary. Even if my country does seem to have forgotten me, I have always thought about
it.”

B C
• The Literary text A, is an excerpt from Jose Rizal’s
Noli Me Tangere, wherein Laruja was one of the
guests of Kapitan Tiago in his dinner party.

• Jose Rizal, through this novel, wanted to expose the

hypocrisy and unfair treatment of Spaniards to the
Filipino people during their colonization. The
Novel, with a touch of romance, ignited the anti-
Spanish responsiveness of Filipinos.
• Jose Rizal – ( Calamba, Laguna Province) The Philippines’ national hero
was also a prolific writer, poet, and essayist. Jose Rizal’s two novels,
Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were social commentaries that
sharply revealed the injustices of Spanish colonization while praising the
Filipino in his most natural state.
The execution of Jose Rizal at 35 years old, set off the Philippine Revolution
and paved way for the country’s independence. Even without these dramatic
events, Rizal’s books and his final poem, “Mi Ultimo Adios,” stand on their
own literary merit, and have influenced scores of Filipino writers since.
• The literary text B, The Molave and the Orchid, is a four-story book for
children and adults, written by Sionel Jose. Illustrated by Alberto Gallado.
• The Molave and the Orchid was a story of love and purpose. It”s a story of an
old arrogant, strong and sturdy Molave tree and a beautiful orchid who clings
in the Molave's trunk. The little Orchid taught the Old Molave how to love and
what it’s purpose.
• "Work is the logic of life. And sacrifice is the logic of love. You have not worked
for anyone, nor sacrificed for anyone. Even to someone as fragile and helpless
like me you cannot even be kind. Then what is your purpose? I do not think you
know what love is."
(Ayban Gabriyels review)
• Sionel Jose – (Rosales, Pangasinan) A writer deeply concerned with social justice, F. Sionil Jose’s
novels have been translated into 22 languages, and he’s one of the most widely read Filipino authors.

• Sionil Jose’s Rosales Saga is a five-volume work that follows the Samson family and their changing
fortunes over a 100-year timeframe.
• Sionil Jose’s books are especially illuminating for anyone interested in provincial life in the
Philippines, the revolution against Spain, and the framework of the Filipino family.
• His anti- elitist have made him a somewhat unpopular author within the Philippines, but Sionil Jose’s
works are among the most highly acclaimed internationally of any Filipino writer.
• He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Literature in 1980.
• The literary text C, is a selection of 14
memorable stories by Jose Dalisay.
• Written in different technique of story-telling.
• Relates to real-life experiences of love and
relationship.
• Jose Dalisay Jr. - (Romblon Province) writes a popular online column where he’s more commonly
known by his pen name, Butch Dalisay.

• Dalisay was imprisoned during Martial Law, and his experiences from this portion of Philippine
history are brought to life in his first novel, Killing Time in a Warm Place.

• His second novel, Soledad’s Sister tackles the plight of overseas Filipino workers, and was shortlisted
for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2007.

• Within the Philippines, Dalisay has won 16 Palanca Awards, the country’s highest prize for literature.
