PREPOSITIONS

WHAT IS PREPOSITION?

A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or


phrases to other words within a sentence. They act to connect the
people, objects, time and locations of a sentence.
There are few interesting linguistic facts about prepositions.
• They are closed class of words which means no new preposition gets
added to the language.
•  Prepositions do not have any other form.
• Most of the prepositions have many different contextual and natural uses.
•  Prepositions (such as to, with, across, etc.), Its object (a noun or
pronoun), or any of the object's modifiers (an article and/or an adjective)
are called prepositional phrase. Examples: in the garden, at 12 o’ clock,
on the wall.

1. PREPOSITIONS OF TIME

Basic examples of time prepositions


include: at, on, in, before, after and during.
For years, months, seasons, centuries and times of day, use the
preposition in:

Examples:
I first met john in 1987.
It’s always cold in January.
Easter falls in spring each year.
The second world war occurred in the 20th century.
We ate breakfast early in the morning.
For weeks, complete dates, or months with specific day, and special days,
use the preposition on.

Examples:
 We are going to school on Monday.
 Christmas is on December 25th.
 Please buy me flowers on my birthday.

For specific time, use the preposition at:

Examples:
 Families often give love at Christmas time.
 Her class will be finished at 7pm.
After
Something following a specific time or event
Ex.: Katrina bought a new dress after winning the pageant competition.
Before
Something prior to a specific time or event
Ex.: The teacher explained the rules before the class get started.
During
A simultaneous events
Ex.: We go to church during weekends.
1. We will be celebrating our anniversary (on, in) July 4th,
1982.
2. I was born (in ,on)1998.
3. I was born (on, at) exactly 2 am.
4. We will have a trip (on, in) Sunday.
5. I will be back on my work (after, before) a short rest.
2. PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

 A preposition of place is a preposition


which is use to refer to a place where
something or someone is located. On, at,
in, by, from, to, towards, up, down, across,
between, etc. are the prepositions of place.
USES OF IN, ON AND AT

In is use when referring to something/someone that is inside or within confined


boundaries. This could be anything, even a country. It does not say particularly where
but gives an enclosure to the noun it connects with.
Examples:
1.Jim is in France.
2.The fruits are in the fridge.
3.I am currently staying in a boarding house.
On is use when referring to something with a surface or even street name.
Examples:
1.The sculpture hangs on the wall.
2.The images are on the page.
3. He lives on Main street.
At is use when referring to something at a specific point/ complete address.
Examples:
1. The boy is at the entrance of the movie theater.
2. He stood at the bus stop.
3. I am at Kilometer 3 George street, Quezon City.

• Under is the opposite of on and means ‘below the surface of’
something.
• Inside indicates a position which is within the context or surface.
• Outside indicates a position out of something.
• Above indicates a much higher position than the
preposition on does. It also indicates something out of reach.
• In front of means a position towards someone/something.
Examples:
1. The cat is under the table.
2. My phone is locked inside the car.
3. The kids are playing outside the house.
4. Major is ranked above corporal.
5. He parked his car in front of my house.
EXAMPLES:

1. There a lot of beautiful paintings (in, at, on) the wall.


2. I will go for a vacation (in, on ,at) France next week.
3. My friends are waiting (at, on, in) the gate.
4.There are security guards(outside, inside) the house.
3. PREPOSITIONS OF DIRECTION

 Indicates that someone/something is


headed or directed to somewhere.
Prepositions of direction include
prepositions such as into, on,
through, to, towards, etc. 
Into refers to entering or looking inside something.
• James went into his room.
Through refers to moving directly inside something and out the other end.
• The bullet Ben shot passes through the window.
Across refers on moving from one side to another.
• I saw an old woman passing across the street.
To indicates a motion in the direction of a place.
• We are going to Mexico.
From indicates movement with a specific point of origin.
• She told stories about her trip from Spain to New York.
Examples
• I am going (to, at, in) Italy next month.
• I am going (to, at, in) Italy next month.

• They stare (into,to,from) the darkness.


• They stare (into,to,from) the darkness.

• Jane jumps (in, into) the pool.


• Jane jumps (in,into)pool.
