PHYS1007 Week 4 - 2023

Group Problem Solving #1

Dr Lorena Del Castillo
Applied Physics 1_ Week 4 Workshop_ Group exercise #1
1. Kirkup Ex.
The following are student examples of quantities and their
associated uncertainties. There is a mistake or omission in each.
State the mistake and, where possible, correct it.

•The spring constant k = (12.1234 ± 0.0265) N.m-1

•The density of copper = (8825 ± 300) kg.m-3
•The velocity of sound in water = (1.48 ± 0.03) x 103
•The wavelength of light is 6.0 x 10-7 m ± 1 x 10-7

2. Giancoli Chpt 1 Problem 38 (pg 16)
Show that the following combination of the three fundamental constants of
nature (that is G, c & h) forms a quantity with the dimensions of time;

.
Note: This quantity, tP is called the Planck time and is thought to be
the earliest time, after creation of the Universe, that the currently
known laws of physics can be applied.

3. Giancoli Chpt 3 Problem 29 (pg 77)

A diver running 2.3 m.s-1 dives out horizontally from the edge of a
vertical cliff and 3.0 s later reaches the water below. How high was the
cliff and how far from its base did the diver hit the water?

4. Part of a 2015 Exam Question

Sports medicine testing showed that the head of Greg Norman’s golf club (mass
0.200 kg) was traveling at 60.00 m/s just before it struck the 46.0 gram golf ball
which was at rest on the tee. Immediately after the collision the club head was
traveling in the same direction at 40.00 m/s. Find the speed of the golf ball just after
impact.
Note: Momentum is always conserved.

5. A cricket player fields the ball near the boundary line and has to throw to
the wicket keeper at the stumps exactly 40 meters away. If the initial speed of
the ball when thrown is 30.0 ms-1 and ignoring air resistance,

(i) What is the speed of the ball in kilometers per hour, kph? AND (ii) At
what angle does the player have to throw the ball in order for it to reach the
wicket keeper on the full?
