LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson Students are expected to;

 Determine the surface areas and volumes

of pyramids .
 Solve community-related problems
involving surface areas and volumes of
pyramid.
PYRAMID
 Pyramid is a polyhedron with one
polygonal face (base) and all other
triangular faces (lateral) having a
common vertex.
 A regular pyramid has a base that is a
regular polygon, with faces that are of
similar areas and an axis that passes
through the center of the base.
DID YOU KNOW?
 That…. the pyramid is named according to the shape of the base.

Like these ones:

Square –based pyramid Triangular-based pyramid Hexagonal-based pyramid

TRIVIA
The Pyramids of Egypt is a square-based pyramid. The Great Pyramid of
Giza is one of the oldest and largest pyramids present in the world.
PYRAMID’S AREAS AND
VOLUMES
LATERAL AREA OF A
REGULAR PYRAMID
 The lateral area of a regular pyramid is defined as the area covered
by its slant of lateral faces.
 A pyramid is a three-dimensional object whose base can be any
polygon whereas its side faces are all congruent triangles.
 The lateral area L of a regular pyramid with slant height of l and
perimeter P of the base is given by :
LATERAL AREA OF A SQUARE
PYRAMID
 The lateral area of a square pyramid is the sum of the areas of its
side faces. This is also known as the lateral surface area (LSA) of
the square pyramid. We know that a square pyramid has:
a base which is a square.
4 side faces, each of which is a triangle.
EXAMPLE: LATERAL AREA OF A SQUARE
PYRAMID
 What is the lateral area of a square pyramid whose base is 10 cm
and whose slant height is 6 cm?
SURFACE AREA OF A
PYRAMID
 The Surface Area has two parts: the area of the base (the Base Area), and the
area of the side faces (the Lateral Area).
 The total surface area of a pyramid (non-regular pyramid) is the sum of it’s
lateral faces and its base.

Where:
S= Sum of the Lateral Faces
=𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒂 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒆
TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF A
SQUARE PYRAMID
 For a regular square pyramid, the formula in
TSA= (½)pl +B
Where:
p= represents the perimeter of the base
l= slant height
B= the area of the base
EXAMPLE: SURFACE AREA OF A SQUARE
PYRAMID
 Find the total surface area of the square pyramid if each side of the
base measures 16 cm, and the slant height is 17 cm, and the altitude
is 15 cm.

17cm
16cm

15cm
SOLUTION: SURFACE AREA OF A SQUARE
PYRAMID
Given: As the base is a square, the perimeter of the base is 4 times 16 cm
P =  4(16)
P = 64 cm
The area of the base = a2
B = 162 = 256 cm2
We know, that the total surface area of the square pyramid is (½)Pl +B square units
Substituting the values in the given formula, we get
The total surface area of the square pyramid = [(½)(64)(17)] + (256)
TSA = 544 + 256
TSA = 800 cm2
*Hence, the total surface area of the square pyramid is 800 cm2
VOLUME OF A PYRAMID
 The volume of pyramid is space occupied by it (or) it is defined as
the number of unit cubes that can be fit into it.
 The volume V of a pyramid having a base area B and altitude of
length h is given by:
𝑽= 𝑩𝒉
EXAMPLE h=4

s=6
 Find the volume of the regular square pyramid with a height h= 4
in. and base edges of length s=6 in.

The area of the square base . Because h=4 in., the formula  becomes:

Therefore, the volume of the regular square
pyramid is
EXERCISES (INDIVIDUAL) (5
PTS EACH)
Instructions: Solve the given problem and show your solutions. Use ½ crosswise yellow paper
to answer.

A regular square pyramid is displayed in the Community Auditorium. Suppose

that the side of the square base measure 20 m each, slant height of 16.4 m and
that the altitude is measure 13 .
a. Find the Lateral area of the pyramid.
b. Find the Total surface area of the pyramid
c. Find the Volume of the pyramid
