PACKET SWITCHING
• Packet Switching technology is divided into two parts
– Datagram switching
– Virtual circuit switching
• Datagram switching is done at the network layer.
• Each packet is treated independently that’s why there is no
need for connection setup.
• Packets are referred also as datagrams.
• Switches are referred as routers.
• Datagram Packet Switching is referred as Connectionless
switching.
• Datagrams contain destination information and the
intermediary devices uses this inf
• ormation to forward datagrams to right destination.
• In Datagrams Packet Switching approach, the path is not fixed.
A datagram network with four switches(routers)
• All four packets (or datagrams) belong to same
message, but may travel different paths to reach
their destination.
• Datagrams arrives at their destination in out of order
with different delays between the packets.
• Packets may also be lost or dropped because of a
lack of resources.
