RECOMBINAN
T DNA
What does DNA stands for?
DNA stands for
Deoxyribonucleic Acid.
It is a polymer composed
of two polynucleotide
chains that coil around
each other to form a
double helix.
What is Recombinant
DNA?
Recombinant DNA, also known as

Chimeric DNA, is a form of DNA

constructed in the laboratory. It is
generated by transferring selected
pieces of DNA from one organism
to another.
WHO DISCOVERED THE RECOMBINANT
DNA?

PAUL BERG
1926-2023
STANLEY NORMAN COHEN HERBERT W. BOYER
1922-2020 1916-2020
PROCESS OF
RECOMBINANT
DNA
The complete process of recombinant DNA
technology includes multiple steps, maintained
in a specific sequence to generate the desired
product.

 Step-1. Isolation of Genetic Material.

 Step-2.Cutting the gene at the recognition sites.

 Step-3. Amplifying the gene copies through Polymerase

chain reaction (PCR).
 Step-4. Ligation of DNA Molecules.

 Step-5. Insertion of Recombinant DNA Into Host.

APPLICATION OF RECOMBINANT
DNA
I. Applications in Crop Improvement
-Distant

-Development of Transgenic Plants

II. Applications in Medicines and Industry

-Production of Antibiotics
-Production of Hormone Insulin
-Production of Vaccines
- Production of Enzymes

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
USING RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNOLOGY
ADVANTAGES

1. Preventing the transmission of deadly diseases

2. Limiting disease infections caused by insects
3. Reducing hunger and famines around the world
4. Getting rid of undesired personal traits.
5. Cloning animals to preserve endangered species

DISADVANTAGES
 The majority of the downsides that are seen in using
recombinant DNA technology to organisms are ethical.
Many people believe that using it will go against the law of
nature. Many also feel that it opposes religious beliefs
because of how technology controls the natural and
building blocks of life created by the almighty creator.
1. Fear of spreading invasive species
2. Uncontrollable population growth
3. Higher risk of increasing allergies
In conclusion, Recombinant DNA
(rDNA) is important because it
allows us to study DNA and
through the knowledge that we
gain from those experiments and
study we are able to come up with
new inventions, and we can
improve the foods and things that
we have.
