2 LIME
 Used as main Cementous material before the invention of CEMENT. Some of its properties are similar
to cement like plasticity and easy stiffening(hardening).

MANUFACTURING PROCESS:CALCINATION OF LIMESTONE NOTE:ELABORATE THE

PROCESS
CaCO3 CaO + CO2 ( > 900°C)
“quick lime”

CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 + Heat SLAKING OF LIME

QUICK LIME will react with atmospheric Carbon dioxide and gets converted to CaCO3.Therefore
controlled amount of water is added to get hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) . Addition of more water forms slurry
known as lime mortar/lime paste/lime putty(used in white washing, finishing coat in plastering, etc).LIME is
never obtained in free state.

 If CaO is not slaked well, it will absorb moisture from air & since the volume expands up
to 2.5-3 times popouts will occur.

 Slaked lime can also be bought from a factory. It is more homogeneous & economical but
less plastic.

 Seasoning provides a homogeneous mass & completion of chemical reactions

 During slaking heat evolves & volume expands.

Some of the terms related to lime are as follows:
4 Calcination:
 The heating of lime stone (CaCO3) to redness in presence of air.
Hydraulicity
 Hardening of lime in damp places, water or thick masonry walls with no free circulation of air.
Lime (Quick lime)
 The moisture and carbon dioxide is removed due to calcination of limestone. The product which remains thereafter is
called Lime
CaCO3 = CaO + CO2
(Limestone) (Lime)
Setting
 The process of hardening of lime after it has been converted into paste form.
Slaking
 The quick lime cracks, swells and falls into a powder form on adding water to it. The process is called Slaking and the
product formed is known as Slaked lime or Hydrated lime.
CaO + H2O = Ca (OH)2 + Heat
(Hydrated lime)

8 Uses of Lime

 In producing masonry mortars(Lime + sand lime mortar)

 Plaster mortars – sets slower than gypsum

 White-wash

 In production of masonry blocks – slaked lime + sand under pressure
