Introduction to
Micro hydro
● Hydro electric power scheme that produces
up to 100 KW of electricity using a
flowing steam or a water flow.
● The electricity from such systems is used
to power up isolated homes or
communities and is sometimes connected
Micro-hydro to the public grid.
● Micro hydro plants were installed in Nepal
since the 1960s with locally developed
turbines to replace diesel engines mainly
for agro-processing.
● Between year 2007 to 2014, Nepal
government as built 400 micro run of river
hydropower.
● Installed Capacity of micro hydropower
plant is about 14.5 MW only.

laghujalbidut ● With the power generating capacity of

17kW, this microhydro is supplying

pariyojana electricity to 200 houses, for the price of

NRs 6 per unit.
● Synchronous generator is used for
generation purpose
● Electronic load controller(ELC) of the
micro hydro supplies power to Balanced
heater as ballast load.
● To know the discharge of the micro-hydro
power by float method and salt dilution
method.
● To calculate the head of micro-hydro
power by Abney-Level method.
Objectives ● To determine power generation capability
of micro hydro using calculated discharge
and head.
● The head is the vertical distance between
the water source and the point where the
water is discharged after passing through
the turbine.
● Head measurement is used to determine
Head measurement the flow rate of water that is needed to
generate specific amount of power and
determine which type of turbine to be
used.
● Out of all head measuring techniques such
as water filled tube method, spirit level
method, altimeter method, we chose
“Abney Level method”.
● Discharge measurement is used to
determine the rate of water flowing
through the system.
● This can be done using various techniques
such as using a flow meter, measuring the

Discharge water level in a flume or weir, or using a

current meter.
● Out of all discharge measurement methods
Measurement: such as the bucket method, propeller
device method, stage control method, we
chose the “float method” and “the salt
gulp” method.
The head was measured by Abney level method
and found to be 9.15m and discharge was
measured by float method and salt gulp method
was found to be 0.277 m^3/s and 0.25 m^3/s
respectively.

Results From the measured head and discharge, we

calculated the power generated which was found
to be:

Power=efficiency*discharge*head*9.81

For q= 0.277 m^3/s, P =12.431kW

For q=0.25 m^3/s, P =11.2201kW

the micro hydro : properly, leading to increasing risk to the

operator
● Lack of proper measuring devices that
might result in incorrect data
● Proper care should be given to the well
being of machines and protective devices,
which increases the efficiency of overall

Recommendations: ●
system
Timely maintenance should be carried out
● Grid connection of the micro hydro should
be done to enhance the economic activities
of people using the facility
