RESEARCH

QUESTION
Prepared By
Group 3
OUTLINE
• DEFINITION
• IMPORTANCE
• CHARACTERISTICS OD GOOD RESEARCH QUESTIONS
• EXAMPLES
• FORMULATING RESEARCH QUESTION
• RESEARCH QUESTIONS FOR EVERY TYPES OF RESEARCH
WHAT IS A RESEARCH
QUESTION?
• A research question is a question that a study or
research project aims to answer. This question
often addresses an issue or a problem, which,
through analysis and interpretation of data, is
answered in the study's conclusion.
Importance of a Research Question
• Research questions are very important.
• Both professional researchers and successful student
researchers develop research questions. That’s
because research questions are more than handy
tools; they are essential to the research process.
Importance of a Research Question

• A good research question is essential to

guide your research paper, project or thesis.
It pinpoints exactly what you want to find
out and gives your work a clear focus and
purpose
Characteristics of a Good
Research Question
• Feasible
• Clear
• Significant
• Ethical
Feasible
• Writing feasible research questions means that
they CAN be answered under objective aspects
like time, scope, resources, expertise, or funding.
Some questions that you can ask yourself
regarding feasibility are, for example: Is there
enough time to conduct the research?
Clear
• It should be: clear: it provides enough
specifics that one's audience can easily
understand its purpose without needing
additional explanation.
Significant
• The question should be sufficiently focused to
steer your research to its logical conclusion. It
should summarize an outstanding issue or
problem you want to investigate through
research-by a literature review or an experimental
study or a theoretical exercise.
Ethical
• Always consider the welfare of peolple,
animals or who so ever involve in your
study. Look into ways of answering the
research questions without inflicting
physical and psychological harm to persons
involved.
Example Of Research Qustions
How to Formulate Research
Questions?
• Developing research questions
• Clear and focused. In other words, the question should clearly state what the
writer needs to do.
• Not too broad and not too narrow. The question should have an appropriate scope.
...
• Not too easy to answer.
• Not too difficult to answer.
• Researchable.
• Analytical rather than descriptive
Research Questions for
Descriptive Research
• Focuses on observing and reorting factors or aspects of the
research problem. Phrasese such as how often/frequently, how
many/much, what is/are, to what extent/degree, and the ikes are
used in these questions. For example, you study the use of social
media among Senior High School Students, you can ask the
following questions:
- What are the various social media platforms used by Senior High
Students?
- How many hours students spend on social media per week?
Research Questions for
Correlational Research
• Aim to determine the relationships among two or more variables in your
research problem. Correlational research questions usually begin the
phrases “Is there a signinficant relationship” or “what is the relationship
between /among. In the study of use of social media and level of digital
literacy of students following questions asked:
- What is the relationship between the length of hours spent on
social media and level of digital literacy of students?
- Is there a significant relationship between the type of social media
used and the level digital literacy of students?
Research Questions for Ex Post
Facto Research
• Attempt to identify the causes of the phenomenon in the context of
your research problem. It is also assumed that no control or
manipulation of variable has been done in order to cause the effect. It is
understood that the cause of the problem already exists before you
conducted your study. For example, ex post facto study on family
background and digital literacy of students, the following questions can
be asked:
- is there a difference in the literacy level of students between their
cultural and educational family background?
Research Questions for Experimental and
Quasi-experimental
• Suggest that answers to these questions are brought about by
manipulation or control of a the study. These questions provide
explanation to the causal relationship of variables. The
following research questions can be asked on studies on
elemenary student’s remedial sessions and academic
performance of students:
- is there a difference in the posttest scores of the control
group and experimental group?
SCOPE AND
DELIMITATION OF
THE STUDY
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
• The scope and delimitation of the study sets boundaries and parameters of
the problem and narrows down the scope of the inquiry.
• The scope specifies the coverage of your study such as variables,
populations or participants and timeline. Delimitaion cites factors of your
study that are not included or excluded or those you will not deal in your
study.
• In these section of your research paper, you may also state the reasons why
youo did not include the variables. A clearly written scope and delimitation
of the study will make it definitely easier to answer questions which are
related or not related to your study
Components of the
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
• Topic of the study
• Objectives or Problems to be Addressed
• Time Frame
• Locale of the Study
• Characteristics of the respodents
• Method and research instruments

STATEMENT OF
THE PROBLEM
What is ‘Statement of the
Problem’?
• A statement of the problem is used in research work as a claim
that outlines the problem addressed by a study. The statement of
the problem briefly addresses the question: What is the problem
that the research will address?
• The problem statement should address not only what the
problem is, but why it's a problem and why it's important to
solve it.
