The length of a

confidence interval
Objectives
1. Identify the length of the
confidence interval; and
2. Compute the length of the
confidence interval.
Confidence level
Is the probability that the interval
estimate contains a parameter, it
describes what percentage of
intervals from many different
samples contains the unknown
population parameter.
Confidence coefficients
These coefficients are used to find
the margin of error.
Confidence 99% 98% 96% 95% 92% 90% 85% 80% 70%

0.99 0.98 0.96 0.95 0.92 0.90 0.85 0.80 0.70

Confidence Interval
Interval estimate is a range of values
that is used to estimate a parameter.
This estimate may or may not contain
the true. For instance, we write it in this
form
𝑳𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕< 𝝁<𝑼𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕
Formulas
Margin of error, E Lower limit

𝐸=𝑍𝑎¿2
( )
𝜎
√𝑛
𝐿𝐿= 𝑋 − 𝐸
Upper limit
– sample size 𝑈𝐿= 𝑋 + 𝐸
– confidence coefficient
– sample mean
– population SD
Example:
A study of 50 students showed that their average
score was 87. the standard deviation of the
population is 9. find the 90% confidence interval
of the mean score for all students.
Given:
= 87 =9
= 90% - 1.645 = 50
= 87 =9
Given: = 90% - 1.645 = 50

𝐸=𝑍𝑎¿2
( )
𝜎
√𝑛
𝐿𝐿= 𝑋 − 𝐸
𝐿𝐿=87 −2.09=𝟖𝟒 .𝟗𝟏
𝐸=1.645
( )
9
√ 50
𝑈𝐿= 𝑋 + 𝐸
𝑈𝐿=87+2.09=𝟖𝟗 . 𝟎𝟗
𝑬 =𝟐 .𝟎𝟗
, so the confidence interval is between
84.91 and 89.09
= 87 =9
Given: = 90% - 1.645 = 50

𝐸=𝑍𝑎¿2
( )
𝜎
√𝑛
𝐿𝐿= 𝑋 − 𝐸
𝐿𝐿=87 −2.09=𝟖𝟒 .𝟗𝟏
𝐸=1.645
( )
9
√ 50
𝑈𝐿= 𝑋 + 𝐸
𝑈𝐿=87+2.09=𝟖𝟗 . 𝟎𝟗
𝑬 =𝟐 .𝟎𝟗
The confidence interval is (84.91, 89.09)
Example:
An online seller of chicken wings, which is very
popular in Tondo, manila surveyed several
customers. Fifty – two percent of the customers
were satisfied with the services that offered with
a 3.98% margin of error. Determine the
confidence interval using this information.
Given:
= 52% or 0.52 = 3.98% or 0.0398
Given: = 52% or 0.52, = 3.98% or 0.0398

𝐿𝐿= 𝑋 − 𝐸
𝐿𝐿=0.52 −0.0398=𝟎 . 𝟒𝟖𝟎𝟐 𝐨𝐫 𝟒𝟖 . 𝟎𝟐 %
𝑈𝐿= 𝑋 + 𝐸
𝑈𝐿=0.52+ 0.0398=𝟎 .𝟓𝟓𝟗𝟖 𝒐𝒓 𝟓𝟓 .𝟗𝟖 %
The confidence interval is (48.02%, 55.98%)
or (0.4802, 0.5598)
Length of Confidence Interval ()

𝐿=𝑈𝐿 − 𝐿𝐿
If the sample mean is not given, we cannot compute
for the upper and lower limit of the confidence
interval, the formula can be used:

𝐿=2 𝑍𝑎¿2
( )
𝜎
√𝑛
or 𝐿=2 𝐸
Example:
An online seller of chicken wings, which is very
popular in Tondo, manila surveyed several
customers. Fifty – two percent of the customers
were satisfied with the services that offered with
a 3.98% margin of error. Compute for the length
of the confidence interval.
Given:
= 52% or 0.52 = 3.98% or 0.0398
Given: = 52% or 0.52, = 3.98% or 0.0398

𝐿𝐿=0.52 −0.0398=𝟎 . 𝟒𝟖𝟎𝟐𝐨𝐫 𝟒𝟖. 𝟎𝟐%

𝑈𝐿=0.52+0.0398=𝟎.𝟓𝟓𝟗𝟖 𝒐𝒓 𝟓𝟓.𝟗𝟖 %
𝐿=𝑈𝐿 − 𝐿𝐿 𝐿=2 𝐸
𝐿=0.5598 − 0.4802 𝐿=2( 0.0398)
𝑳=𝟎 .𝟎𝟕𝟗𝟔 𝑳=𝟎 .𝟎𝟕𝟗𝟔
Example:

The population of SULU Hornbill has a

standard deviation of 40. Compute for
the length of confidence interval for 90%
confidence level having a sample size of
150 and a sample mean of 65.
